    Hi All

I have a DM800 and recently it seems quite noisy even in standby.

Anyone else have a similar issue or know if it’s a problem?

    Thanks

Sounds like the internal fan which is a common fault on the DM800.I had the same problem a while back so I disconnected it from the mainboard to be honest unless you have a internal harddrive installed you won't need the fan

Maybe working but the fan bearings are shot thats what the grinding noise is

Have mine disconnected, bought a laptop cooler like the one below. Runs silent and keeps the box cool.

Yup, i had the same problem. Just purchase one of the laptop cooler fans and disconnect the fan from the mainboard.

    Problem solved.

Don’t know how confident I am opening the dreambox but I’ll give it a go.

Long-term would it do any damage leaving the box as it is ?

    Hi Barr,

Its pretty straight forward, just a matter of removing a few screws and then unplugging the fan from the board.

Just need to be careful when unplugging the fan from the board.

What about this has an alternative - would it be a better option rather than a laptop cooler ?

This is the same kind of fan that is in your dreambox already, so it is likely that you may have the same issues with this after a while.

I unplugged the fan on the board of my dm800 and I have a laptop cooling fan that does the job grand.

Just a quick question - I have a hard drive installed. Will the laptop cooler alone be ok for the dreambox or is it better to keep the internal running as well?

As you've a HDD installed, I'd have thought that you should keep an internal fan running.

The laptop cooler would probably be a good idea too, for additional cooling.

Laptop fan makes a massive difference!

Have internal hdd in mine and it runs super cool!

    For €4-5 its worth it!

I have an internal hard drive but had to disconnect the internal fan, due to noise. I now just use a laptop cooler underneath the dm800 and have had no problems.

Do you have an internal fan working as well ?

    Lads,

if you open the DM and remove the fan, turn it over and remove the sticker on the base of the fan.
Add a few drops of oil (dont use WD 40 but anything else should be grand, I used 3in1 oil )
Cover the hole back over again and replace the fan.
    All should be well.
Only just oiled mine this week after the sound got worse and worse, cant hear a thing from it now

That works most of the time but the fan usually gets noisy again after a few months. Disconnecting the internal fan and buying a laptop cooler for 4 or 5 euro really is the best option.

Do any of you know if the USB slot on the back of the DM800 will power one of those laptop cooling pads?

    Yes it will.

I have one I bought from ebay and have never looked back with it.

I also disconnected the internal fan to stop the grinding sound.

Is this a problem only with Cloned boxes ? I've an original DM800HD, there was never a fan installed in it.
Also have a 250gb Western Digital HD in it for years, never any problems with heat. It heats up for sure but no problems experienced ever with the box.
