2000 Mercedes C220 CDI - Alternator Belt

    Hi All

    I bought a 2000 Mercedes C220 CDI last week.

Yesterday a slight squeaking started at low revs. It was a small bit worse this morning. I just assumed it was a fan belt and didn't worry about it. I am getting it serviced next week and was going to get it sorted then.

But then, this evening after doing about 200 miles today, about a mile from home, the battery light came on in the car and the power steering went. (Lucky I didn't go over the ditch)

So now, the squeaking noise is gone, but the battery light comes on and I have no power steering.

I am presuming that the belt that started squeaking has now snapped and since the battery light is on, that it was driving the alternator.

Firstly, do ye think I am right in my presumptions.

Secondly, if it is a belt on the alternator, is it a big job to change it. I can't really do without my car and I need to get it sorted as quick as possible.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know the car, but it sounds like the same belt runs the alternator and the power steering. The belt should be less than 10-15 euro, and I'd guess it'd take less than half an hour to fit. Put it in somewhere tomorrow morning, or your battery will run down (possibly at an inconvenient/dangerous time)
