    Hi Folks,

I was wondering if anyone here has used AptOnCD and if the would recommend it or a different tool?

I have a desktop with ubuntu on it that I've been tweeking for the past few weeks and Ive jsut setup a second box with a better hardware spec so I want to be able to move my ubuntu installation to the new machine. AptOnCD will do this for my packages but will this include the settings for applications and themes etc?

Also the new machine has PinguyOS on it, as this is a linux variant would it matter if I restored the AptOnCD to this system?

    Dave

Recently I switched notebooks... it was a dual boot vista/ubtunu 10.10 machine. I removed the solid state drive from the old notebook with the intention of backing it up an then reinstalling from scratch. Out of curiosity I placed it in new notebook and powered on... vista "blue screened" - no surprise. Ubuntu boot with no problems! In the end I never did reinstall and I'm using the ubuntu installation for a couple of months now without issue.
Perhaps you might be able to move your old disks!?

Does Ubuntu not have something like 'remastersys' that would duplicate the install to an ISO image for reinstallation?

I don't know that it does as I use a different Linux distro with this functionality ...... PCLinuxOS & mylivecd.

Using it gives me a complete backup of an installed OS on a live media for reinstallation in as many PCs as I wish.

Remastersys is a great tool, but it can take a bit of practice to get it to bring all the tweaks with it.
Two of the livecd's I've made I'm happiest with were made with it, but it's not so hot on recent versions of Ubuntu.

If you have a drive in the other machine, I'd recommend using Clonezilla.
Download the ISO, burn to CD / USB and boot the original machine off it.
It's got a menu system which is easy enough to follow.
Backup the disk to an external drive or whatever, and then restore it to the other machine, completely replacing what's on it - then you've 2 machines perfectly set up,
and a backup snapshot of it exactly as you liked it in case you need it again.
It's possible to attach the drive from the other machine directly and image straight from one drive to the other, but if it's the first time you've used the tool, it's possible to make one mistake that can lose you all your work, so if you've another disk go and use it.

If the (compressed) backup is small enough, the CD also allows you make a recovery DVD which is a handy thing to keep around. I sometimes blutac a copy to the inside of a PC case after finishing one, so it's there for a factory restore to a well set up configuration.
