The gf golf 1.4 petrol mk4 engine managment light came on. i know this could mean a load of things.

but i had a quick look under the bonnet. basically the is a quick loud ticking coming from a black box

left of the powersteering resivoir and between the washer and coolant resivoir.

I can hear the ticking from it from outside the engine bay with the bonnet closed. when you turn off the engine i can hear a hissing noise coming from behind the right hand side of the engine block. which seems to be where a hose from that box goes.

I was wondering if there was a hole in a hose leaking air??? would that effect what ever this box is?

if so whats a possible fix , the engine management light will need to be turned off once its fixed is this possible without diagnostic gear?

    much appreciated as always

    Marton

found out that it could be the fuel filter. would i be right in saying that?

a loud ticking is hardly good. and i take it then if that is the fuel filter a hissing noise would not be coming from the hose unless there is fuel leaking..... which there is not.

I am probably way off here.

The ticking could be from the charcoal canister purge valve (some ticking is normal on these). It is not the fuel filter. I've seen the MIL (malfunction indicater light) on a Audi A6, VW Bora and Polo caused by a dodgy coolant temperature sensor. It is best to get the code read for a better diagnosis. Some kind boardsie might oblige here.

Not in the petrol car, the fuel filter in the petrol model is behind the rear wheels on the passenger side. Diesel model would only have fuel filter in the engine bay.
