Golf Gti tyre pressure

I have a 05 Golf Gti. The tyre pressure and Esp lights are constantly on. I brought it to VW for a diagnostic and was told that the ESP control sensor under the passenger seat was faulty. Got that part replaced and the lights went off for about a mile then came back on. Checked all the tyre pressures. One was a bit low so I topped it up. Light went off. 10 miles later it came back on. I put some petrol in the car and it went off again. Then I picked up a passenger and it came back on. It seems to be very highly sensitive for some reason. I brought it for a new diagnostic and the same fault is showing. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I'm thinking a faulty connection somewhere or the actual TPM on the wheel is damaged.

What codes is it throwing? I don't think there are tyre pressure sensors in the MKV. It uses data from the ABS sensors instead.

Here is a copy of the report he gave me.

Did you pay €730 to the dealer to replace it?

Probably a stupid suggestion as I'm sure you've already done this, but make sure to reset the TPM after you adjust the tyre pressures - by pressing and holding the button until it gives a long beep.

No. I used a second hand part. But if I can't find out what is wrong I will have to. I did bring it back to them for a second diagnostic and they gave the same fault. The guy I spoke to didn't even know where the part was located though.

I've tried. The light is on from the moment I turn the key and it won't reset no matter how long I hold it.

Where are you based? that report seems a little vague. If you want me to scan the car and give you an exact fault reading i will.

I have a similar car and keep getting engine management lights. My mechanic told me that most VW's are over sensitive and keep throwing up faults when there's nothing actually wrong with them

Wouldn't agree with the above point. If there's a fault code stored in the ECU and it reoccurs after clearing it then there's more than likely a fault. Your mechanic sounds like he is fobbing you off.

The usual procedure for that fault is to replace the ESP sensor unit. It sounds like you have done that, are you sure the one you replaced it with was ok?

This guy is still your mechanic ? :D What are they over sensitive too? the world? which one of the many many sensors that can trigger an engine management light is over sensitive?

Thanks for the offer. I have had it checked in two independent mechanics and they gave me the same diagnosis.

Seeing as how the light goes on and off with minor changes in weight distribution in the car I am thinking it might be this.

I can't be 100% but it's acting exactly the same as it was before. I did damage the wheel a while back on a pothole so I'm wondering if it could be slightly buckled and causing the error. Big problem is that it has to be NCT'd next month and the new rules will fail it.

Got four new tyres and found that an alloy had been damaged at some stage. Faults are now gone. SO much for the fault code they gave me. I wonder how much VW would have charged me before they got to the problem.
