HTC Desire problem

For the last week or so my Desire has been acting up.

Mainly it's the menu button - it keeps swapping between it's normal functionality and similar functionality to the home key (e.g. zoom out to overview/go back to main screen). However it also has rebooted a couple of times randomly when I have just had it on my desk doing nothing with it.

As you can imagine this makes using various apps etc. almost impossible so I need to get it sorted.

I suspect it's software related as it doesn't always do it and seems unrelated to how hard I press or which side of the button etc.

I've cross-checked the software versions etc. with a work colleagues phone which is working fine and everything is identical.

A lot of apps have updated in or around the time this started and I've installed/uninstalled a few too so I'm not sure where to start trying to figure out if it's a rogue app.

I'm considering that the best option here is a factory reset and start over. I suppose I should also format my SD card?

My contacts are on Google, I've not got anything critical on the device and I'm not too worried about saving text messages. The only thing that's bothering me is my paid apps - what happens when I wipe these?

    Anyone have any thoughts/advice.

back up your stuff and factory reset it. Mine was a bit weird for a while and a factory reset sorted it. I didn't bother formatting the SD card though.

Wife sent a HTC Legend back to HTC for a screen repair a few weeks ago and we did a factory reset first. Actually we backed up sms first with a great app that syncs all the messages to your gmail in a folder but that's beside the point. There were a few paid apps on the phone and we were worried about the apps no longer being available after the factory resets. However once we got the phone back and went through the setup process all the apps returned as normal.

I am unsure if that's the norm but it seems sensible.
