    Hey everyone,
I've been playing golf for about a year now and have been borrowing clubs off friends to do so, but now am going to buy my first set of clubs.

I'm pretty unsure as to what it is that I want/what I should expect to pay/what's worthwhile paying/what clubs i don't need/what brand to go with

I'm also unsure as to the appropriate size of the clubs, I'm just over 5 9'

Any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated,

I can spend between 200-500 or so on the set.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

    Hi Dave,

I bought this set for my brother last week from Amazon + also bought a trolley off the same supplier, total €280

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NAYYYQ/ref=oss_product

Thought it was a cracking buy. I used the clubs on the rang the other night and they are good, he is also about 5ft 9 or so and he reckons the length is fine on them.

I think you should go with a package set like this for a while and maybe in a few years when you get good, you could always get a decent set (600-700 just for irons), you will be forever adding to this set anyway. Might also be worthwhile looking on www.adverts.ie

    Hope this helps,

    James

200-500 is a massive gap. You could get a half decent second hand set for a few hundred.
People tend to spend a fortune on the clubs they use the least, so in my humble opinion I would be looking to buy a second hand putter. See what putter feels and looks nice and then buy it second hand. Same is true for wedges. Most of the shots in a game are around the green or within 100 yards so a couple of wedges like Vokeys would (in my view) be a good start.
After that you could look at getting a very good set of new irons and get custom fitted at someplace like Halpennys, you get the cost of the custom fitting back, but it's nice to go and hit a selection of irons and see which ones suit you and which ones you like the best. You just need to tell them your budget and they will bring a range of irons to the driving range and you hit them all.
After that a second hand 3 wood and hybrid might be a winner.
Hybrids are a must these days.

Anyway, thats what I wish I had done when I started out and had that budget.

    Yours etc,
    GSH.

I would recommend go second hand with all clubs except wedges. I would also try to get a good estimation on swing speed off maybe a teaching pro. (a lot of people will tell you your swing speed but don't believe them unless they obviously in the know).

I'm imagining that since you are only playing a while your a high enough handicap. Generally your handicap will drop and you will improve pretty quick in the beginning. This would lead to beginner sets becoming useless pretty quick so I would avoid them because it would be wasted money(replacing them by june).

    recommended clubs

    Driver's
    Ping G10 , G15
    Taylormade r9
    Callaway Ft9
All can be bought second hand 150e or less all perform extremely well

    Iron's
I would not look further than ping g10s for a beginner because they will be useful through a good range of handicap's. I know 25hc and 8hc players that use them so and they really do perform well.
Could get a decent set for 250e

    Hybrid
Md golf superstrong range 2010 or 2011
45-80e brilliant performance for the money

    Wedge
    Md wedges full range
45-80e again awesome performance for the money

    Putter
    up to you

Thats less than 500e but no putter or woods.I personally think decent hybrid at the start is more important than a wood as it will give you a second shot on par 5's to move you into iron range and it can be very useful on par 3's. 180 used to be a little daunting at the start so.Woods are harder to hit so.

If you had this set in the bag you would have no excuses gear wise :p
Even if you don't like the clubs recommended I think the selection of Driver Hybrid Irons 56* Wedge Putter is the way to go at the start and then you can expand the wedges later.:D
