    (long story / waffle alert)

Just over 3 years ago (February 2008), my girlfriend's parents picked me up an 8GB 2G iPhone from the US on AT&T (before they started all that security checks muck).

This was before it was released here AFAIK, and I instantly took to it.

Don't get me wrong.. I've been using Mac's since I started in my current job (so close to 6 years now) and while I love Mac's, I wouldn't call myself a PC snob (still use one day in and day out in work). But when I first saw the iPhone announced, I knew it was something special.

It cost me just under €300 (including sales tax etc) for the 8GB model from the US back then, and have had an Zagg InvisibleShield on it since.

So as revisions came and went, the price increased and as much as I love the iPhone.. I couldn't warrant some of the prices they're asking, and there was nothing specifically wrong with my iPhone 2G.

So last year, my trusty iPhone was abandoned and used as an iPod for running (C25K app) and I've tried a few phones - the Android route (HTC Desire.. lost on a flight after 3 months but I never warmed to it) and the Bada route (Samsung Wave, which I've just given to my girlfriend as I found it to be a fecking disaster.. great camera but not much else).

So tonight, I switched on and charged my iPhone 2G. It still holds it charge well (3 - 4 days with moderate use) and I took off the InvisibleShield to reveal an absolutely pristine scratch-free phone underneath.

As for the future, the 16GB iPhone 4 for €599 is a tad pricey. But I can get it on Three with €369 with an 18 month €25 a month contract. Total cost of phone: €819. So I'm paying an extra €220 over 18 months (or €12.22 a month) for calls / texts / Internet with Three. Not too shabby!

But I might see what happens when the iPhone 5 (or 4S / 4GS! ;)) is inevitably released in Q3. Maybe they'll discontinue the 3GS and sell that off for a decent price.

Anyways, summary for the "TL;DR Crowd" - once you go iPhone, you may find it very hard to adapt to anything else. No matter how hard you try!

Welcome home, prodigal son, hang on there while I kill the fatted calf!

Also, your old phone was a POS disaster so you give it to your girlfriend? Nice.

Well, to be fair, her last three phones have been Samsung so she's used to the tiny finicky goddamn touch-keys.

Not to mention the lack of a comma or full-stop unless you go into the "Symbols" area (the '?12' button) and then it's far too easy to accidentally click 'Send' directly underneath it.

Not a bad phone (cracking battery life, great screen, top camera) but everything else was pretty terrible!

I suspect the 3GS is pretty much discontinued as it is with current stock being all that's left. So I'd wait for the 5, see what the price is and hot one of those or a second hand 4

I'm predicting the 5 will have 32gb as the base model relegating the 4 into the space the 3GS currently occupies. I doubt they'll go cloud in this incarnation

Well.. decided to take the plunge, and I bought a brand-new 16GB 3GS with 3 seasons of Millenium on DVD thrown in for €280 off TheKBizzle on Adverts today.

Now, off to sell my pristine 2G.
