Comparative language used throughout the questions but no (C) mark anywhere on the paper. . . . A few Unseen Poetry answers were awarded a 0. . . . I'm very disappointed

Write a report and send it to them.

I'm very unhappy about the content and correcting of the Mocks.ie science papers

Some of our staff have issues with the quality of questions on some Examcraft questions. It seems none of the companies make a really good job of the 'mocks'. We will be sending in letters to complain and explain why we will be using another company next year (though personally I never use bought in papers and prefer to set and correct my own).

Write to them and outline your complaint in detail. I've done this in the past, I think the school weren't charged for correction. I've also corrected for them myself and received papers for re-correction that had been marked by someone else and the school sent them back for re-correction as they were marked so poorly. Discrepancies of up to 40%. You might not want to send them back and have to wait another few weeks but at least the school/students won't be charged for it.

    I correct for DEB.
    Send a complaint asap.
It is not acceptable that they are poorly marked.
It is unfair that those of us who do mark them properly get paid the same as those who correct them badly.

No offense gaeilgebeo as I'm not having a go, but I'm not surprised that many complain about the standard of marking.

I've heard that the going rate for corrections is approx 2 euro per paper - open to correction on this one...

I'm not saying that you shouldn't expect a good job done, but that if you are paying peanuts you will attract monkeys (present company excluded).

In reality the two major companies charge about 5 euro per paper to the school and only pay about 2 euro to the marker.

My school prefers to keep them in-school but only from the point of quick corrections.

I certainly wouldn't do it for 2 euro per paper though.

Well I do it for financial reasons. I get paid €2.25 per paper approx.
I am certainly not a "monkey", I am an experienced teacher/corrector.

I don't think that all correctors should be tarred with the one brush.
I do correct properly. I take my time doing them and strictly follow the marking scheme.

I also correct for the SEC most summers.

Nobody should be judged for correcting for whatever amount of money.

Bottom line is, you sign up for a job = do it properly.
If schools are unhappy with corrections, complain!

I know you aren't a monkey and I did clarify that. I also believe that you are an experienced teacher and I am not judging you for correcting mock exams.

I'm just saying that a lot of people complain that the papers are corrected badly and that some people obviously don't do a good job. I can understand that people are going to cram as many papers as they can into their available time. If people are not conscientious, then a bad job will probably done, as we have seen.

In my opinion the markers should get at least 4 of the 5 euro that is charges for corrections and this in turn might attract a higher quality of corrector.

I haven't complained but I just don't send out any papers to DEB anymore - something that others in the school have decided also.

The companies actually charge 7 euro per paper for corrections, a total scandal if correcters only get 2.25

The €2.00-2.50 that is been thrown around here is the after tax figure as quoted by DEB. They do not tell you the rate before tax.

However the money is still crap and as I have had to do an self assessment for the Revenue a couple of years running I got screwed by them because of DEB who were only paying 20% tax for me instead of 41%. Naturally the Revenue wanted the rest of their money and deducted it from my credits. Not impressed. Down €400 two years running. Did end up getting the money back from DEB as they needed me to correct for them and they were willing to pay the extra tax (which they should have paid in the first place) in order to persuade me to correct.

So moral of the story, if you are in the higher tax bracket, make sure to ask when they are quoting you a rate that it's after the higher rate of tax has been paid.
