Syria is the latest country to be hit by protests and like Libya (hated by west) and Bahrain (loved by the west) the authorities have reacted violently with scores of people having been killed including some soldiers who refused to shoot on protesters.

It is worrying but a lot of comparisons can be made to what happened in eastern Europe previously.

So I wonder, when all these Arab/Middle Eastern countries have shaken off the yoke of oppression, when they can all fart around with iPods and not have to wear traditional clothing, when they all can feast in McDonald's and watch Dr Phil in Farsi or Arabic, when most of them have lost a family member to DU or WP or "collateral damage" but at least now have a future of unemployment but more TV channels, will western soldiers leave their lands or stick around to babysit them?

Question is...who is doing the shooting?

Anyone could come out and say XYZ are firing on these men. How can we be sure? How do we know who it is? It looks pretty chilling but still I'm not convinced of a security forces crackdown. If Syria possess the technology to blow Israeli ships out of the water and give those weapons to Hezbollah, if they are receiving the latest Russian military technology and if these pictures are of victims of a government crackdown then why hasn't this been brewing for weeks and why hasn't Syria shutdown its airwaves and internet like Egypt so easily did?

I think Bahrain is the one to watch, the Saudis sent a rake of tanks in to help their government to quell the protests, also it's been reported that the Bahrain government used nerve gas on the protesters. The Iranians have taken major beef with this and are only waiting on an excuse to kick off, unfortunately this may have massive ramifications as the Israelies are chomping at the bit to bomb the fook out of Iran :(

Egypt shut its internet down only when it lost control. Lots of other countrys like Iran, China and Syria try to contol their internet but if that doesnt work they may do that. Remember as well this town is right on the border with Iran. All a syrian would have to do is cross the border and post his video from there where the syrian authorities cant reach.

In fairness, Israel only want to bomb Irans nuclear enrichment plants. And you can't really blame them, seeing as that looper that runs Iran has said, several times, he plans to wipe Israel off the map...

I understand what you're saying, but it always seems that the Israelis are allowed operate on a different level, when they knocked the crap out of Gaza back in 2008 (I think that was the year) they dropped a massive amount of phosperous bombs, once breathed in the phospherous cooks you from the inside out :(

I fully appreciate that Israel has the right to exist, and are under threat constantly from their neighbours, but how can they ever hold the moral high ground when they do stuff like that? or do they even care?

And I would also ask, why is Israel allowed have a rake of nukes but Iran isn't? it's not like Israel's actions have been exactly humanitarian is it?

    No, no he didn't.

What he said was Zionism would be wiped from the map. A bit like saying you would like Nazi's wiped off the map but you don't actually mean you want Germany nuked and everyone in it killed.

This is a known fact. Even Sky news said he never said it.

And I think its ironic that David Cameron was looking for help from the Saudis to take action against Libya when the self same Saudis had just gone into Bahrain to prop up an apartheid like regieme. The Bahrain military is awash with British military weaponary. You either believe in democracy Mr Cameron or you dont.

Is this really a surprise? Saudi family are puppets for the imperialists.

I strongly suggest you search on youtube for Webster Tarpley and Gerald Celente, they tell the truth, no matter how ugly it is, they may both seem like crackpots initially but bear in mind that both are regulars on all the mainstream news networks in the US, they've been proven right so many times that they can't be ignored any longer.

During the weekend and towards the end of last week most focus has been on Libya but a popular uprising is also taking place in Syria and the authorities are getting even more savage with their reprisials.

Well either bring a resolution to the UN or bring the matter up at EU level. I also think we as a neutral country should at EU level try and outlaw the sale of weaponry to non-democratic countries. Lets put it up to France, Britain and Italy.

They could, and I agree that they should. Would it achieve anything though?

The head of the UN has already contacted the Syrian leader and urged him to exercise restraint.. it's not as if they are not aware of the situation.

I don't think that the UN needs to get involved and start throwing resolutions out or approving military action at every sign of trouble anyway. Sometimes diplomacy is best.
