just take a few deep breaths before you hit your next shot if you have just hit a poor one.
Go back and think of the times you have executed a particular shot well and not the bad shots...TRY ANYWAY
Stick to your routine no matter how pissed off you are

and if all else fails get a punching bag so you can take your anger out after your round :D

Think having a routine before each shot is important, it can help to settle the nerves and
relax you which will allow for a better shot.
And as said above thinking back on times when you hit a good shot similar to the one you
are about to hit can give you the confidence to go ahead and hit a good one.

Have to say you cant go wrong with the Rotella books- particularly The Golfers Mind- you can pick it up for under a tenner, good summary point at end of each chapter which are easy to remember......

Personally i think some people just take too long for every shot and have too much going on in their head.

I was always taught that golf is a simple golf which gets confused when you try to think about it too much.

If you could sum up my golf game, these would be the two perfect sentences to do it. Wasn't always like that, used to play quite fast in fact! I have a tendency to get "stuck" over the ball - sometimes for a moment, sometimes for an eternity! Just too much going on in there at times, even when I play well.

One of the best pieces of advice I read was in one of Rotella's books, pretty sure it was 'Not a Game of Perfect'. He was chatting with Fred Couples - who Rotella acknowledges as a player with zero need for a mind/confidence coach! - and he asked him what he does when he a pulls a club out of the bag. Couples replied "I just think of the best shot I ever hit with that club."

    Some good advice right there.

The most frustrating thing for me is not being able to cope with nerves. Sometimes I dont suffer from them, sometimes I do. Doesnt really depend on the occasion, can get them when its a small comp, and be free from them when a big one. Sometimes I can get to grips with them.

I think a lot of it is when I know I'm not playing enough, am not near match sharp, playing maybe twice a month max, and am up against it - sometimes the golf is not there. Playing off 8 you know you need to have some golf under the belt. It might seem simplistic, but for me, practise helps my mental side. Having played a few relexed evening rounds, so I'm used to being on the course and hitting good shots in a relaxed frame of mind.

I love the Couples quote, going to try to remember that one. Deep breaths always good, force yourself to walk slowly when you feel like you need to calm down.

Done all rotella books n CDs and still read em when bored...make you feel good n some ideas but Karl Morris is the TOP for mental stuff with techniques n almost self hypnosis stuff!!!!

had been stuck off 1 for years...now off +2 after donig his stuff...all from mental side only...people have their ideas as i read above but his stuff if worked on properly will give a major edge when on the course when going well or oppositely after hitting a shocker..

    Hmmm good thread

79 two week's ago with a few mates 103 last week in the medal I bottled it big time. I put it down to missing my range time two weeks in a row, having new wedges, and my putting was way off anyway so no confidence to begin with.

But in reality its all about putting a swing together I think it was a mental thing for me when you are playing well you always take more time setting up and in the swing. I seem to get quicker in the transition the more pressure I'm under which is disastrous.

I'm currently working on controlling my tempo with a swing thought saying in my head something like " turn sloooow release" just to keep me smooth at the top. So for me anyway getting nervous or being under pressure speeds me up which throws off my balance and my timing. Kinda comes back to Couples saying take your time and think positive.

I decided to relax and not take golf so seriously. This lead to nerves, frustration and anger. Play each hole on its own. A hip flask also helps!

I'm now on the "putting out of your mind" book. It's strange that around 40% of shots or more are on the green and there are no trees/sand/water on greens so it's just a matter of getting the ball in the hole, yet so many stand on the green over a 20 footer and think "don't 3 putt". If they hit it to 10 foot they think "Whew, thats not 3 putt range".
The books also say to just practice 3,4 footers constantly putting the ball in the hole and remembering it out on the course.
The Rotella books are quite interesting.
They all make sense. However, if I hit a tree later on today and it bounces into the water the real test will be if I laugh it off or lay into the trolley.

    Yours etc,
    GSH.

Very interested in Karl Morris actually. I believe he is doing some sessions again soon.

Can you give me some idea of what his method is and qhat kind of techniques you use on the course??

I was at one of his sessions last year, and most of what he says is common sense and similar to Dr Bob. Some of his stuff is a bit deeper though and seems more "scientific", actually thats probably not even the right description, had to describe, maybe "serious" would be better.

Some of it almost borders on self hypnosis or something, you know, deep breathing, imagine a good place etc etc. It was worth going to even if only to take a few ideas away imo.

I remember one of the tasks was to write down our best score on each hole of our home courses and work out what our best combined round would be - his point was that thats not a dream or a goal, we've actually shot that score on each hole so there's no reason we can't shoot 62, 64, 65 or whatever it is. The idea was to make it seem attainable because we've porved we can do it.

I'd say he's a love it or hate it kind of guy tbh. But hey, whatever works and all that :)

    Thanks Russman!

Just counted using my fingers and toes: I'm delighted to know that I've already shot a 52!! Woo hoo!

Interesting idea. I see what he's getting at though. A lot of the "latest" concepts in mind coaching seems to be leading towards meditation or hypnosis. All I really want is something to help me with the 4 footers....

Yeah, definitely going to look into it. I think hypnosis and that kind of thing would definitely work for me. A lot of this positive thinking stuff that so many, including Rotella, push doesn't really work that well for a lot of people.
