Hey, just wondering if anyone knows what "masking" means in relation to getting your hair coloured?

Apparently I unknowingly got it done today in the hairdressers, didn't want to seem like a total gom asking them wtf i was being charged for.

so if anyone would like to shed some light, thanks!

I don't know what it means, but looking on google, it's showing results for hair extraction.

Maybe the hairdresser put a hair masque on your hair before/after colouring, maybe if your hair was dry etc?

I don't mean to be rude/smart so I apologise if I/this post comes across like that, but why did you pay for something when you didn't know what it was? Also, you aren't going to look like total gom when asking about something.

I gather from your post the hairdresser didn't ask you if you wanted it done, so did it without your permission, am I wrong?

This might sound a bit "odd", but ...

Why are you willing to ask "randomers" on the internet what the term means ... when you've handed over money to get whatever it is done, already, hours earlier!!!

I mean, surely the people doing it should be the ones to justify your expense?!

Are you happy with whatever they did? Does you hair feel more "mask"ed than it did previously?

Why on earth would you ever hand over money to pay for something, if you don't know or understand what was done, and you don't even understand what it entails?!

Some people clearly have more money than sense.

It means colouring your parting where the roots might be visible and I think also maybe around your hairline around your face - "Masking" the grown out colour effect to make it look as though you had your hair freshly coloured all over. Its less then having your roots coloured and should be cheaper.
I think its pointless tho - the reason I colour my hair all over is for the vibrant fresh colour and shine but some hairdressers are lazy (not bothered explaining benefits of masking vs colour all over) and think the customer wants whats cheapest without asking.

To be honest, i was in a crappy mood and they were uber busy; so i wanted to get out of there as fast as i could. I got colour done and was charged for "tint" and there was an extra charge for masking.

it was more than likely something to do with the colour, but she never explained anything about it. so it was 14 euro extra onto the colour charge.

the last time i was cheeky to hairdressers(basically just asked the receptionist had said hairdresser who i had app with was experienced or not - i didn't receive the greatest reaction.

decent hairdressers are few and far between it seems.

Well if you are wondering why i am asking randomers (fyi - the whole point of boards), (note also - there are many more threads which are more stupid than mine) & are implying that i have more money than sense.....then why are you even bothering to reply?

There may be many reasons as to why I did not confront them, and I don't see why I should have to justify myself. go pick fights in real life. cough...trolling...cough.

I was simply asking a question, which i kindly received an answer to from abrr1000. many thanks!

When I get masking done it is just covering the greys near the roots rather than applying a full colour all over my hair. The dye is painted on with a brush very close to the scalp.

I have always had to ask for it to be done. I would be very unhappy if I was charged for something I had not requested.
