I'm a third year mechanical engineering student and I'm looking to get some experience during the summer with a view to getting some ideas/inspiration for my final year project next year. I have quite a bit of experience with machinery and my results are good.

I have tried so many places and sent out so many CVs but I'm determined to get something, I'll work for free at this stage!

Ideally I would like to work in the power/energy sector but I am partial to all areas. So if anyone has any advice/tips/help on where or who to contact here in Ireland or abroad, please let me know!

    Many thanks!

I'm a 3rd Year Mechanical Student too, and although I haven't been actively looking for a job, there doesn't seem to be too many about!

I hope I'm not sounding too pessimistic! Have you asked your college by any chance? (You're not in DIT DT006/3 by any chance, are ya?)

I am in the same position as ye guys.

Except I am studying Structural Engineering.;)

I am a third year looking for work placement for the summer. I only got two replies, and honestly I was very greatful for hearing back from them even though it wasn't good news. The head engineer from a large firm even rang me personally to tell me he hadn't anything to give me, but keep trying and he would keep me in mind for the future. Sound man.:)

Anyway here I am, my last resort. Like I said I am looking for summer placement in the field of structural engineering in Cork City. Any help/leads at all would be amazing.

Its a long shot, but I am still holding on hope.

well....I know, that if you are already in your third year its a bit too late....but isn't there a chance to study in cooperation with a company?

    Cause thats what I did.
I would have never ever took up studies if i didn't had that opportunity...to be honest....

i applied at the energy sector of a large global company...starting a a technical draughtswoman... ans as it turned out to be good (and my marks were very good, of course) i applied for their internal study-program.

maybe...if someone considers to study mechanical engineering, he (or she ;) ) should try it taht way... though it is a lot of extra-pressure...

but: i keep my fingers crossed for you, mates...that may due to recent circumstances engineers in the energy sectors are recommended....

    cheers

    Hey,

Google are looking for technical interns.

They are looking for a minimum of three months and will work around your academic schedule.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the all the replies! The search goes on...

@ Kevin: I am in DIT alright, but not that course!

@ Structrally sound: I hope you find something suitable! Best of luck

@ farwood: I am led to believe that third year is the best year to get some work experience as in previous years I would have to little material covered. Maybe I'm wrong..? As regards studying in cooperation with a company - that would be ideal in my situation! But again, I struggle to find a company which offers this facility to undergraduate students.

@ EngIreland: Thanks very much for that link, I have just applied. If there is any more, please do let us know!

sorry...maybe it wasn't thatt clear the way I wrote it....

of course the third year is the best for collecting some experience....

what I meant is, starting the studies in cooperation with a company (paid by the companie which wants you to do the studies and later on gives you a safe job, caus they spent money on your education..this is the way I did it)... the its too late to consider it in your 3rd year. should have started that way.

syr, I#m no native speaker :) but maybe this time its getting clearer.
