    Hi,
My girlfriends laptop takes an age to get going and I think its caused by the amount of programs that open automatically when the laptop powers up. It can take 5 minutes or more and it does my nut in.
I've gone through what they are and have deleted programs that are used rarely but it hasn't made much odds.
Any suggestions? The laptop is maybe 3/4 years old.
    Thanks in advance.

Click on the start button. Click on "Run". Type in "msconfig" (without the quotes!). A window should open. There'll be a tab called "startup". Pretty much untick every box in there except for ones that say anything to do with the operating system and anti virus.

I wouldn't personally use msconfig to edit startups. Download ccleaner:
    www.ccleaner.com
and install it. Click tools and startup and look at whats there. Delete what you dont need. Or if you dont want to install it go to run and type regedit
    click ok
    Click HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE
    Click SOFTWARE
    Click Microsoft
    Click Windows
    Click CurrentVersion
    Click Run
Look in here and delete what you are sure you dont need

Look for things like java schedule, adobe reader, real player too these can be deleted

Personally I find Hibernation is faster than shutdown/startup. Its in Power Properties. It will use as much disk space as you have RAM though.

Sorry I forgot I started this thread. Thanks to all who posted, I used CCleaner which I had already installed on the gf laptop and it worked a treat.
    Thanks again.
