Hi. I am looking for car for a while and i am confused about one thing. What if a car i would like to buy has no tax and tax expired 3 month ago. Somebody told me i will have to pay for this 3 months, but somebody else said i wont. Please tell me how does it work.
Also, about what difference will be in insurance between car with 1.0 engine and 1.2? Is it big? I rang 3 insurance companies and for me insurance for 1.0 car will be about 800€. About how much more i will have to pay for 1.2?
    Thanks

You only have to pay for the tax from the day you buy it....

Only the insurance company can quote you, ring them again or do an online search.

Try and buy the car at the star of the month as opposed to the end. You have to pay the tax for the entire month so if you where to buy the car on the last day of March you will have to pay tax for the entire month of March.

the insurance prices vary from car to car, and between drivers, usually a 1.0 will be cheaper but some cuould be very close to a 1.2 and the other way around too, all depends on various factors.

There can be some odd variations too that you wouldnt expect. For example I sold a bmw 318 diesel recently (1.7 turbo diesel), and transferred my insurance to a 1.3 starlet which i borrowed while waiting for another car, insurance company informed me that if i wanted to transfer it full time to that car it would cost an extra €97 per year. Now i would have thought with it being a bmw and me being in my 20s that would be a very negative factor for insurance, but apparently they though i would be a bigger risk in a starlet. Though the amount of young lads driving dodgy starlets is quite high.

anyway, on the tax thing, no, you don't have to pay the tax if it expired when someone else owned the car. Once you buy the car and sign the change of ownership form, you are liable for tax from the date the car is legally registered to you. If you buy it at the end of a month, you will be liabel for the tax for that entire month. but on a small car the charge for 1 month's arrears will be very small.

Thanks o lot everyone. :) I paid insurance already and it was "only" about 850€. I thought i will be much bigger, because of the engine size (1.4) and because i only have learners permit.
