Laptop External Hard Drive Questions?

Hi my acer aspire 6930G laptop broke on me & I'm getting it repaired but
there is the chance that it will cost way too much so I might just get a new
    laptop.

The thing is that I have nearly 250GB of stuff on my old laptop!

I'm wondering if you guys (gender neutral word! :P) could help me out with
    my options.

I would probably get a laptop with like a terabyte of space so that I could
put all of the old data onto the new laptop but

    1) What kind of (cheap) devices could I use to plug the old hard drives up
to so that I could copy the old stuff onto the new laptop? I'm thinking
there is some kind of external hard drive taker you can hook the old ones
up to but I'm unsure of names and info on this process or alternatives.

    2) I'm unsure of a way to find out the specifications on the hard drives
currently in the laptop, I think there are two different-sized connections
that hard drives can take to be hooked up to pc's, I'm unsure about
laptops & I just don't know how to find out what is inside my acer 6930G.

    3) What (cheap!) device could take the hard drives in the acer?

    4) Is there a kind of permanent external device you can hook the drives
up to so that you don't need to copy all the stuff to? Could I use this
device to access my files now from a different pc while I wait to buy
the new thing (if I have to!)

Thanks, I really appreciate any help! :D

You can buy a hard drive enclosure for your old laptop hard drive. Something like this is probably what you are looking for.
