    Hi,

Can someone please help me .....

Do you have to have your wedding ring the same carat as your engagement ring? I have it in my head that they must be the same or one will damage the other???

    Thanks...

Huh? As in have an engagement ring and then another ring that is typical of an engagement ring as a wedding ring?

A wedding ring is generally a band. It can have diamonds in it but they are IN the band, rather than on top of the band like an engagement ring.

    Hey Tilly,

Im getting my wedding band made and the jeweller said that the metals dont have to be the same carat ...but that 9ct gold is tougher than say 18ct gold.
My engagement ring is 18ct white gold and he is making my wedding band from my moms (rip) old yellow 9ct gold wedding ring. He is only adding 18ct white gold to it for me to cool down the yellow tone..hope this helps

Tinkerbell .....no, I mean if your engagement ring is say 18 carat gold, does your wedding ring have to be the same carat or can it be different...........

If they are different the lower karat weight will eventually wear away the higher karat weight - that's why it's normally recommended that you have the same type of gold in both rings. That being said with a 9 karat and 18 karat gold ring you'll probably won't have an issue in your lifetime. The problem is really if someone matches a platinum ring with an 18k white gold ring, the platinum can cause noticeable wear on the white gold after a few years.
