I need something cheap to replace my Focus and was looking at Mondeo's from around 2002/2003. There are lots available at low prices but with mileage above 150K. Is this too high to go for or what limit should I try to stay under. It is going to be a family car so I need a degree of reliability, however we use my wifes car most of the time for big journeys.

    rule one

1/ buy a zetec spec or above

2/ make sure it has a very good service, 150k is relatively high milage but on a car that is looked after well, there is no reason it should not keep running smooth.

3/ my 2001 mondo has 131k and is going grand, zero problems. just do regular maintenance on her

4/ look for crashes, pretty obvious one that.!

My mondeo 05 LX 90BHP has 330,000K/M but is running perfectly and just tonite passed the nct, i keep it serviced regurally and thats the key, dont be put off by big millage once the car was looked after and well maintained.

I cant find a list anywhere stating the hierarchy of models, is an LX above or below a Zetec?

    From low to high:

    LX
    Zetex
    Ghia
    Titanium
    Platinum

That's from memory, could be more.

Steel only replaced the LX and Platinum replaced the Zetec on the MkII Mondeo in 2006. 2002/2003 1.8 Mondeo LX and Zetec models had different engines, LX was 110bhp and Zetec was 125bhp. Zetec was also better equipped.

The only 2 I can see close to home are a 2002 and 2004 Lx 1.8 petrol. Should I avoid these for some reason? Should I hold out for a Zetec or higher?
Thanks for the help so far!

Lx ones have a $hit engine..

for a large saloon, the duratec se engine in the zetec is much much better.

zetec also have 4 x electric windows, sports seats, front fogs, alloys, and maybe more stuff.

its not like mondeos are expensive. lol, there is no reason in the world nowadays to buy poverty spec cars.

    Its a buyers market

Put simply, the Zetec and above is a nicer place to be with more toys etc. The engines etc are different too.

Ive my 04 lx mondeo tdci up for sale at the moment. It has 150k and has held out very well plenty of life left in it. If buying a diesel at this mileage make sure it has had diesel pump checked and replaced if neccesary also dual mass flywheel and clutch would have been due by then.

If looked after i dont see much of a difference between lx and zetec. Mine has the same engine as zetec, ghia, titanium etc.. It has cruise control, climate control, elec windows, elec mirrors so really tge zetec has alloys and fogs over the lx. If a diesel one interests you drop me a pm.

What about a Mistral, where does that come in the pecking order?

There must bee a lot of dodgy LX's around my area and loads of good Ghia's and Zetec's because nobody wants to sell them. All I can see for sale are LX's with the very odd, really high mileage , very old Zetec.
Anyway, one last thing, should I go for a diesel or a petrol, it will be mainly for use around town and the odd longer journey. I have heard the diesels can have a few expensive problems but are they a better option overall.
