DIY is great if you have the server, html, css, photoshop & seo skills (few more you could add in there too). If you don't, your website is going to reflect poorly on your business and will have a negative effect on sales.

I'd wait till you have the money to get someone who knows what they're at to get it up and running.

if you dont have the money to start off you should check out bangecommerce. They will build you a e-store for free and take a percentage of the sale. I think its 3 percent. Afair their fee is capped at 50 euro.

So when you dont make money neither do they.

www.shopify.com is probably the market leader in this area. Check it out. You could be up and running very cheaply

Just to throw in my 2 cents, www.volusion.com .... I find them the easiest to work with. You can be up and running in no time, they have some out of the box templates you can buy too, money well spent in my opinion.

I just used www.thenet.ie and was very happy with price and service. My website is basic enough as I have only one product and a handful of pages but you get the idea of design etc? They have sample pricing on their home page.

    Hi,
I'm doing just that for two retail outlets at the mo. Would be happy to give you advice/pointers. Drop me a PM if interested.

I think with e-commerce it really pays off to work with someone with experience in the area. There's a lot of pit falls and mistakes that can be made, conversion optimization problems etc. No man is an Island and all that.

Search the huge range of e-commerce off the shelf platforms available if you are trying to keep costs low and compare them against the features you require.

Yeah a self build can look very unprofessional unless you have experience doing it.
