Was it called that throughout the Defence Forces or just the Bks' I was in. I wonder if anyone still serving stopped wearing it? Just a thought as I flick through the new book on Irish Army medals.

Correct and right. Think it ceased in 1990ish.

I remember we got some of the ribbon for it and fashioned it to our comrades tunic who had been on the mat a bit more than the rest of us. He saw it before he dressed but still put the tunic on and walked the lines with it to howls of applause from us.

Same bunch of lads all put insulation tape around their medals. It was for a joke on a member of the unit who despite his age and service had no medals or just one. When he asked what was the tape for he was told "so we can all march in silence like you". More howls in the lines then:D:D

I remember hearing about it - only 60 a year were to be issued, ORs only but there was no criteria for awarding it and so allegations of cronyism etc came about. The rumour I heard was that it was pulled at the instigation of PDFORRA but I don't know if that is true.

    No qualifying criteria for it?

I can certainly see where it got the name "Clique" medal from then. Unbelievable.

My memory of it was waster's getting it.

Fat, lazy 'grade III merchants' who never came up on anyone's radar - still leaves a sour taste in a lot of serving soldiers mouths.

Obviously there were qualifying criteria for it otherwise everybody would have received one regardless of conduct. I never heard it referred to as a "Clique" medal.
