You mixed up soul, you will get no uk stations on dab in dublin, dab is like Fm but lots of people seem to think its like sky tv for radio

ive been reading on here that talksport is now on dab in the south east, i was under the impression that dab is what most new car stereos have?, maybe im wrong& just looking for a decent radio that will pick up some uk stations on any band, but a friend of mine can pick up 2 or 3 uk stations on the fm band they come in with the station id tag aswell

would be interested in hearing what stations u yourself can pick up on dab?

Very few car stereos have DAB. Talksport is on a trial system in the South East and only there.

In the other areas of Ireland with DAB you get all the RTE stations (1, 2, Lyric, RNaG, Pulse, Choice, Gold, Junior/Chill) and that's it.

Dragging up an old thread here but I too am one of the 'mixed up souls' Kevin mentioned!

I got a DAB radio for a Christmas present and am so disappointed to discover I can only get a selection of RTE stations.
Anyone here tell me then what is the point of DAB radios? I was expecting to get in stations from all over the world or at least the UK.

Thanks balion. I presume I'd need wifi for a smart radio to work? As you can tell I'm not very 'smart' myself with regards to these things...

Tune in radio app plus all you can eat data = Internet car radio ( when it works lol) look forget about dab radio it's dead in the water , the trails in south east going nowhere last time I checked there were about two stations on it. Tune in radio plus vpn for five live etc = sporting nirvana .

Can you elaborate on this part please?

@ Splendour......yes you need wifi for smart radio. It's an internet radio but calling it a radio doesn't seem to do it justice lol.

Thought so-will look into it but am not an advocate of having wifi on in house unless necessary. Thanks for the info!

Absolutely not. The South East trial DAB transmissions are now in their third year and are going strong.

It currently carries 13 stations, some not available in the area and some not on FM at all.

It was the first non-RTE DAB multiplex in the country and the first in the country to carry DAB+ as well as standard DAB, also the first single frequency network in the country, with two transmitters on the same frequency.

And I understand that some new services may be appearing on it soon too.

RTE DAB 1 on 01/01/2006 was SFN and has been ever since. All transmitters are on 12C. There are areas within the service area of both the initial transmitters and even more so now that Kippure, 3R and CC are all on.

Yes but initially the tx service areas didn't overlap.

No, they most certainly did. North Kildare is in service area for both. In fact, in the earliest weeks I frequently suffered serious reception issues due to de-syncing.

Additionally, Kippure which hugely overlaps with Three Rock was up before the Total mux.

People please don't buy a dab radio unless you have Internet radio on it , complete waste of time , if it eventually replaces fm fine but really it's the digital tv equivalent of sairview !! Am off to bed to listen to five live on crystal clear tune in app lol.

    Then I stand corrected!

Have a DAB Radio and listen in Dublin. Some really great stations, RTE Channels, 80s radio, radio rírá, UCB Ireland, and for the past month Christmas Radio, makes a nice change from the usual fm stuff.

I'm currently trying to find any DAB station on a radio I've borrowed but can't get a blessed thing on it!

Well you had better luck than me -all I can get is a selection of varying RTE stations. Was hoping to get UCB UK on mine but can't even seem to get UCB Ireland.

80s/RiRa/UCB are on a commercial trial in the Dublin area (different trial to the south eastern one). If you're in any of the other service areas of RTE (Cork/Limerick/north east/eastern midlands) you won't get them.

Actually Ri-Ra and All80s have been carried on the South East DAB trial since the summertime and UCB Ireland has been on it since September 2010!

The combo of them, no other commercial channels and rte means its the Dublin and not total trial they're getting though

MYOB, I urge you to get your facts straight as this whole thread is a complete source of incorrect statements regarding DAB in Ireland, especially between your and 'decies' claims regarding the SE Trial, none of which helps people's opinions or decision making process when considering DAB.

    To clarify, the SE Trial, which has been on air continually since April 2010, carries the following at present.;
    4 FM,
    All80s,
    Beat 102-103,
    KCLR96fm,
    Phantom,
    Radio Nova,
    Raidio Ri-Ra,
    RTE Choice,
    South East Radio,
    Tipp FM,
    UCB Ireland,
    WLR FM.

I suggest that if you don't believe me, as someone who's been involved in radio and the SE trial for years, then you phone Total Broadcast or take a trip to Waterford or Wexford with a DAB radio.

I know what's on the Total trial - you are wildly missing the point and indeed causing pointless confusion. Starting from replying to a post that was specifically about the RTE DAB service areas (Which Total isn't in) and onwards. In fact, all the confusion on the thread is coming entirely from you.

If someone is receiving the RTE stations - not available in the South East - as well as RiRa, UCB Ireland and All 80s on their own it was quite clearly NOT the Total trial they were receiving, but the current Dublin commercial trial.

At no point did I say they were not on the Total trial, as it was quite clear they were not receiving this so it was completely irrelevant, so I've no idea why you're completely and utterly over-reacting here.
