    Managed to get my first full time job, past jobs were only Summer employments last one was the Summer just gone.
    Got a full time job last week in the hospitality industry, I am wondering;
    Only on weekends at the minute (for about 3 weeks) will I have to pay tax on the weekend payments?
    Am I entitled to not paying tax for a period of time when I am on a 5 day week?
    Also what rate will I be taxed at and what are the new government charges that I will have to pay?

    Thanks for your help

    Congrats on the new job hunter. Nice to see some new employments and good news.

    Firstly to avoid being placed on emergency tax ask your new employer for their tax registration number and contact your local tax office quoting your pps number and the companies number and your start date. Do this immediately and you will receive a certificate of tax credits in the post. Your employer will receive one also.
    On your other questions the amount of days you work is irrelevant. Tax is based on your income.
    If you have not worked til now and have not been in receipt of social welfare payments you will have built up tax credits from Jan - mar and depending on your income should have a period at the start where u will pay little to no tax. Without figures i can only make guesses. Please refer to revenue.ie for current tax rates and bands.
    As for the new gvmt social charge? I still dont get it:)

    Good luck in the job

    Thanks alot for clearing up the main issue of emergency tax. Last Summer emergency was a pain, 41% of 8.95 last Summer was torture, not leaving the emergency situation hit me again cos Im left with little money after tax every week until I claim it all back

    Remember to claim back last years emergency tax , and indeed maybe some PRSI too ( if you paid A1 contributions )
