Jake Redshaw, 17, from Salford, bought a six-year-old Vauxhall Corsa for £3,000 after he passed his test earlier in March.
He told the BBC he expected comparison website insurance quotes to reach about £3,000 - but received a headline figure of of £32,819 from the AA.

Unbelievable. I can still remember getting my first insurance. Thank god it wasn't that high. Its almost as if the insurance companies don't want young people driving.

    They don't ;)
I was really lucky with mine, got the IR£4000 + quote on 1 litres but got insured for IR£1588 with Hibernian on a 9 year old Rover 414 when I was 18 on a provisional, strangely enough I think two or three years later I was quoted IR£2400 with a 2/3 years NCB and a full license, off to Quinn then, I defo paid IR£2000+ for a year or two though.

I regularly run quotes on comparison websites when considering changing cars - maybe every three months or so. When the credit crunch was at its height, large SUVs dropped significantly in value here in the UK. I considered picking up a 3-4 year old Porsche Cayenne S (almost no non S) for £16,500 and the highest quote was £129,999, the next £99,999. THe best quote was around £1,300 although I didn't proceed. THe UK insurance market is different from Ireland a lot (100+) of players some of which promise to quote for any details but clearly indicate they don't want the business. People generally find this story amusing.

My first insurance was about 65 euros for a year.
I was 19, and car was cinquecento sporting.
It included my dad's 60% NCB which he agreed that I could use.
If not that, my premium would be probably about 160 euros.

The worst quote I got was €7000, but that's just ridiculous!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭howardmarks

6500 punts on a 1 litre suzuki swift. think i was 19 and the car ended up sitting in the driveway til it no longer started and getting scrapped. absolutely rediculous considering i was a grown up and had the facial hair to prove it.

Even more ridiculous because it probably only wouldnt start cos the battery was dead.€50 on a battery was harfly the differnce between a decent car and a scrapper.

Even if you add a zero onto each figure, both of them are cheaper than I would have expected. I've NEVER heard of a policy only costing 65 euro?

Because it wasn't in Ireland but in Poland.

Mine used to be about 2.5k for a motorbike, then the underwriter for the Irish company went bust in the UK, and all of a sudden, I had to come up with another 2.5k. Made the news here at the time because everyone's insurance has a 2% levy to go into a fund to protect against this, and as it turned out, the fund had been done away with by FF, and everyone was still paying the 2% into Government coffers anyway.
