I own a slate pool table at home, but have a problem. When i hit a shot or roll a ball down the table it wobbles. Now the ball will travel ultimately in a straight line but moves back and forth slightly as it travels to its stop. Has anyone come across this or have any theories on what might be the cause?

Is the table heavy? for example could you move it by yourself? If it's heavy put a spirit level on the table, find out where it's off level, normally a beer mat under a leg does the trick.

Hmm, it may even be an uneven slate, does it happen in just one area or does it happen all over. If it's a biggish pool table it may have a couple of plaster of paris joints between slates which could cause balls to deviate. I remember this happened at a snooker tournament a few years ago just next to the baulk line.

Yeah, them big thick round Heineken beermats can be found on the floor in snooker clubs throughout the land. :)

thanks for the responses guys. It happens all over the table, celtic. I am concerned now that it may be the slate, however is there any possibility that it might be the balls? Could they be off shape for instance?

If it happens all over the table you can be sure it's unlevel, whether it's your floor or table it can be fixed very easily, as I said earlier run a spirit level over the table and where it's off just and this is depending on the tables weight stick a beermat under the leg, in more extreme cases I've seen table fitters stick timber wedges under legs.

This should sort your problem out.

There shud be adjustable legs on your table, i used to own one and just spun the oval spinners the table rests on when i needed to level it off.

This however seems to be a slate problem, after you level the table, try out the same shots and if it keeps happenin, you have a serious problem im afraid..
