    Hi,
I've recently gotten hold of an old Honda big red quad. She need's quite abit of work in order to get her going.

It's been sitting for an number of years.

At the moment I just cant seem to get it started. I've got the engine turning over, however the neatral light on the dash is not lit up. May be the way its hot wired. I believe it has compression, you can feel it from the exaust.

It has a spark as when I remove it you can see it jumping from the plug to the body. I think it may be a fuel issue, the fuel is getting passed the filter. Maybe the Carb, is their anyway I can go about checking this? I also removed the air filter to try and get more air into the engine.

What you guys reckon? She is 4x4 model, I hope to restore her.

Any idea for places with parts in Ireland would be good!!

Also I've no battery in it at the moment, she is just being jumped from a car. connecting both wires to jump leads. Will this make a difference?

after sitting that long the float in the carb might be stuck, or the the jets in the carb could be plugged with gunk, i'd suggest pulling the carb off and give it a good cleaning, pull the idle and main jet out and make sure they are no plugged, if you have compression and spark then it must be a fuel issue.

I must do that, Have not cleaned the carb yet. Would I need a new one or do you reckon the parts can be free'd up in the old one.

I've not done a compression test, the only way i check was that their was air coming out of the exhaust.

    Thanks for your help,
    Peter

No it should be ok with a good clean, worst case i'd say you might need a new float needle and maybe orings for the mixture screw but thats the worst case, as far as compression test not 100% sure but think they have a auto decompression lever built in so that might throw readings out, take the plug out and put your thumb over the hole and crank it over that will give you an indication if there is some compression. I had a big red 250es trike, basically same engine, absolute bullet proof so should be something small to get it going again.
