Hiya, I had a major accident in Canada 7 years ago. I have a titanium nail and pin in my leg. It entailed being cut open and having my hip dislocated....

I *presume* during all of that I would have been transfused (I was out cold or high on morpheine)...

So, I'm barred for life from donating blood as a result? Is that correct?

    DeV.

If you have had a blood transfusion outside of Ireland then yes you are barred for life from donating afaik. I think if it was your own blood that was pre-donated and then given back to you it's ok, but don't quote me on that one.

You'll also be barred if you lived in the UK or the North (me) between certain dates.

where does the burden of proof lie, say if your a naturalized citizen or something? do you have to prove that you've never goten blood?

Op why don't you contact the hospital that operated on you - they woudl definitely have records of blood transfusions etc.

Surely it wouldnt be possible to do such an operation without a transfusion?
    I had presumed so...

Wouldnt necessarily have need a transfusion at all
Its possible, but by no means a certainty

It really depends on the procedure itself but if it was a relatively standard pinning of the bone then no, a transfusion would not be always necessary. Without knowing more detail it's hard to say one way or another. Even then you couldn't be definitive, as there could other factors involved.

I've seen some pretty brutal ortho surgeries before and not a sight of a transfusion.

Biology is amazing isn't it ?
Its also amazing that a cheap, thin plastic apron covering only your torso can stop even the most virulent of superbugs...from MRSA to c diff!

Try and have a look at your medical record (or get your Doc to do it for you). They could tell you if you were transfused during the operation. If you weren't then there's no reason why you can't give blood.
