Wasn't sure were to post this. Hope I have the right forum.

We are hiring a bus from Ireland to Liverpool. The bus driver is sound we have got him all over Ireland and he lets us drink on the bus as we travel. However he is not sure of the law in the UK re:drinking on a bus. He has to look it up and see how strict the UK police are about drinking on a bus. Just wondering does anyone here have any info or ever heard anything like this? Cant see it been a problem as the driver will be sober.

Also can we bring our own cans onto the ferry or do we have to buy there overpriced booze?

AFAIK, it's only illegal to drink on coaches in Scotland.

Check the terms and conditions for your ferry company but chances are they don't allow you to bring your own drink on.

They cant stop u having drink on the coach, as long as its left on the coach. If you want to drink on the boat u will have to get it on the boat, they will be strict on that alright

I am pretty sure that it's illegal to drink on a coach in the UK under their Football Hooligan laws. Might be worth making further enquiries.

Any idea how I would find out?

    *Not legal advice, but...*

Having had a quick trawl through legislation the ban only seems to apply to private vehicles travelling to or from sporting events. Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985 as amended by the Public Order Act 1986:
This section applies to a motor vehicle which—

(a)is not a public service vehicle but is adapted to carry more than 8 passengers, and

(b)is being used for the principal purpose of carrying two or more passengers for the whole or part of a journey to or from a designated sporting event.

(2)A person who knowingly causes or permits intoxicating liquor to be carried on a motor vehicle to which this section applies is guilty of an offence—

(a)if he is its driver, or

(b)if he is not its driver but is its keeper, the servant or agent of its keeper, a person to whom it is made available (by hire, loan or otherwise) by its keeper or the keeper’s servant or agent, or the servant or agent of a person to whom it is so made available.

(3)A person who has intoxicating liquor in his possession while on a motor vehicle to which this section applies is guilty of an offence.

(4)A person who is drunk on a motor vehicle to which this section applies is guilty of an offence.

Sounds to me that as long as you aren't going to a sporting event and the driver is OK with it, you're fine.

    *Still not legal advice*

being over to Manchester a good few times last 20 years and never had trouble drinking cans/btls on the ferry.
a few times i have had a drink on the coach while on UK roads but if your caught you are in a world of trouble.
police are very strict on drinking and its even illegeal to have unopen cans on the coach.
all the tour operators who do the football games have it in terms that no drink allowed on the coach.

Im pretty sure England are playing. This is Euro 2012 qualifiers .yeah just checked Wales playing England at 3 0 clock saturday.
I have often drank on the ferry with my own booze. But boy do you pay for it when your gasping with thirst on the bus after and guess what the sink in the bog doesnt work .
And how many stops will you take to use the loo of course as youre a guy pissing up against anything will suffice.
    Sounds like fun though !
