And it's per liter consumption - so even though Ireland consumes more per capita than France, Ireland consumes a lot more beer and France a lot more wine. Technically make France bigger drunks.

Jeeeeesusss, I heard that the day of the 14 pints had past into history, but I did not want to believe it.

What annoys me is in beer we are 2nd to the good Czech folk, yet our choice of readily available beer is terrible, points to the fact we will settle for any old crap.

I think I drank that amount on Paddy's Day.

    ha ha!

maybe if the crap that is passed as lager in Ireland wasnt fizzy putrid muck, then people could squeeze in a couple of smooth pints at the end of an evening and avoid the shame of an Asian country that cant drink, being heavier drinkers than us.

Right I'll accept the estonians and belarussians or whatever could be outgunning us, dismal eastern european countries do like their gargle, but no f***king way are the portugese outdrinking us, I call shenanigans

I'd also like to apologise to the nation as I personally have'nt really been pulling my weight on this front for the last year or two. I didn't realise the situation was so serious :(

Beer snobs are funny bunch. It's almost like they are desperate to be superior about something, but not quite classy enough for wine.

IMO, if you are snobby about beer you may as well be about fish and chips from the chipper or crisps.

Flys in the face of the American/Anglo anti-Irish propaganda that we are all drunken fools. Fact is we arnt even in the top 10.

13th out of 200 countries isn't bad. In fairness I thought we'd be higher up. At least we are ahead of the Brits.

    I amnt snobby.
My stomach just cant take the fizziness, and crapness, of what is passed off as lager in Ireland.
Heineken in Holland is no gourmet beer. But it IS substantially different and far far more drinkable than Irish brewed "Heineken" in Ireland.

Which again is back on topic.
    Longnecks.
The proper original drinkable beer (brewed in Holland or elsewhere with less use of booster chemicals and proper lagering/ maturing) CAN be got in longneck bottles which has become popular in the last 10 years, but that throttles overall consumption as you'll drink less on a night if youre paying 30% more for 30% less beer per serving!

No, rest assured, we are still a nation of drunken fools. The problem is that we drink too much alcohol. The problem is that we try to fit a weeks worth of drinking into two days.

    Apology accepted ;)

Now get in training, and don't let anything distract you. You can do it, you alone can make us number 1!! We're relying on ya! No pressure:D

While Heineken in the Netherlands (where I am) is not necessarily rated by the dutch, it's the same Heineken as in Ireland, same taste, same fizziness etc; Not many dutch people will actually drink it. They tend to stick to their local breweries. Eg; In the provinces of Holland the are more likely to drink Amstel, in Limburg more likely to drink Dommelsch and in other regions of the south Bavaria.

Yeah but most of the world doesn't really drink. It's only us northern european dipso master race types who do the heavy lifting on the booze front

It's like saying "We're the 4th best country in the world at rugby". So what? Only about 10 countries even play the sport. Might as well say "we're the best country in the world at GAA".

We tend to do more binge drinking. If you go on the continent, you can see why theyd be higher than us, in Berlin if you go to a cafe in the morning, any weekday morning, youll see people sitting around with a drink of wine/beer. They just dont get drunk and start wrecking the place like Irish do.

Not really true. Given that we are the 2nd highest on that list for amount of beer consumed with only the Czech Republic beating us, it would say that most consumers here are quite happy with the beer we are served in pubs (unfortunately)

And if anything we should up our consumption of wine and spirits to catch up with other countries.

Years ago myself and a load of colleagues went to Rotterdam for a hockey tournament and the local brewery was Oranjeboom. This has got to be one of the tastiest beers I have ever had. Tried the cans when I returned home and while nice didn't come close to the draft version we had over there.

We do have one of the nicest beers in the world: Guinness. I love beer - I've lived in Germany, I've brewed my own beer - and it's hard to beat a few pints of Guinness.

The problem in Holland is that each bar only serves one lager/pilsner so if you like a certain pub because of its location/clientele/barmaid whatever then you are a slave to whatever potion they serve. I like to go to this little Dutch cafe on my way home from the supermarket as I like all the girls who work there and am pretty much a regular. They only serve Heineken. Also my local Irish pub (which is a damn ripoff) only serve Bavaria....while the other Irish pub only serve Jupiler. Coco's in Amsterdam where I go to watch the rugby is also a Heineken house. You have to constantly readjust your taste buds if you want to do a pub crawl.

OMFG...Oranjeboom is the WORST beer in holland. It's Holland's equivalent of Harp. Pure hangover hell.

Can't say I (or we) got a hangover. We were all fit enough to play hockey after downing pints until 5AM. And we all loved it, went down like water :)

In fairness history has left us down, if the former Yugoslavia and the former Soviet Union were still in place, we'd be fairly comfortably in the top ten.
