My hands seem to hurt, more the ball type muscle on my palms at the base of thumbs. New to road bikes but is this just something that improves over time or is there anything i can do?

Could be a number of things - are you wearing mitts or gloves? These will obviously help. Also if your position isn't correct on the bike, i.e. you are too high in the saddle etc. you could be transferring too much of your upper body weight through your hands to the bars / hoods. Ideally when you are riding normally in the saddle you should have very little pressure on your hands.

You could try changing your grip / hand position every once in a while when on the bike, try to hold top of the bars when climbing in saddle and hold the drops when descending etc, this should help too.

Finally if you are new to cycling it may just take some time to get used to it (bit like the sore backside many people get :D)

I use these as I don't wear gloves when the weather is warm, I find them excellent.
