If he can prove that van is used for carriage of goods in the course of business (not necesserily his business), then he can tax it as commercial.

Catch the fecker behind the desk by the ear and drag them outside and show them inside the jeep full of tools!! I was with him when he tried to tax it and then said No!! But of course I know it depends on who you deal with on the day!!

it certainly does. no counter cleark is going to do you any favours if you harass them over a rule they didn't create.

as cinio said, prove your using it for commercial purposes and there shouldn't be a problem. otherwise it is a private vehicle.

Or alternatively if he hasn't got a registered business he should just cough up and stop dodging motor tax.

have the governement not cleared up this mess yet?
Under gormleys rules as stated directly by Gormley, A vat number or tax clearnace cert would be required.
This is interesting as you can be legit in business, registered for tax but not VAT registered so this legit business would not qualify for commercial tax however by way of having a tax clearance cert, many non commercial users would qualify - A TD for example would qualify!
