Marriage abroad - still required to "register intent"?

Yes, I know the easiest thing is to ring them but I'm afraid it's the type of question that would get three different answers if I rang three times.

If we're getting married abroad, and the registrars in Ireland won't have anything to do with it, do we still need to pay the 150euro marriage tax? Anyone who has been through this process know?

I've been through this process. If you are both Irish Citizens then you have to register to get a Freedom of Marriage Cert - there is a fee however 20 Euro or so.
It is done through the office on Leeson St. You need to complete forms and I brought mine in by hand to get them processed (rather than relying on the post) but you can do it either way. No long queues at all....

If you are not both Irish Citizens then you must register through your embassy and there are different fees for each country. Hope this helps! You have to do it 3-4 months before the wedding date.

Cool, don't mind paying for something if you're getting something - was afraid we'd have to pay the HSE the 150euro "just because" even though civil and religious would be taken care of abroad...

Just to note that this is optional and depends on the rules in the country in which you are marrying. Strictly speaking the state does not need to know if you're getting married elsewhere.

I'm hoping that the sworn statement that you do for the Freedom to Marry / Cert de Coutume will also be acceptable by the Church rather than getting separate letters from every parish that we've ever lived in.
    Subject to confirmation currently....

Edit - called the registrar this morning - no need to "register intent" with the HSE if both the civil and religious will be taken care of in another jurisdiction. I'm sure another use will be found for that 150 euro ;-)

Seamus I assumed OP was getting married in a country that asked for this Certificate - yes, certain countries you dont need to get this certificate.
