Yo, was in the reading room last night and some dodgy lookin guys cam in a few times and ended up trying to steal a laptop.
Spotted em in time and managed to prevent them and chased em out.
Rang the Gards with description and they were shortly arrested and are being charged with trespass and attempted theft.

    Lesson:

Stop leaving your damn laptops unattended!!
It's really really stupid and only attracts more of the same leading to more thefts and possibly even attacks on students.
Get some responsibility and look after your stuff and be a little vigilant about what's going on around you, NUIG is not super-dream-happyland where everything is buttercups and roses. Have some cop on.

    Great work!

Buildings/Security should really pull fingers out of asses and activate swipe card access to the whole college. The new student cards are RFID enabled and with the magnetic strip too. The problem with that is that people get complacent. Others forget their cards then cant get into the reading room. Others will lose (or purpose or sold) and stuff will still get stolen.

Swipe cards not the answer. A technology is not the solution to a social problem.
Students at NUIG need to simply stop being so careless and ambivalent towards things like this. Apathy is the problem.
After confronting the guy and him threatening me, I turned and shouted out for someone to call security and out the whole reading room, packed, every seat taken, not ONE person stood up and did a thing.
It absolutely sickens me. There was clearly a situation and it was very very visible and not breath of help from a single soul. I'm only lucky the guy didn't have a knife or something.

Shameful NUIG, we should be looking out for each other, not turning a blind eye when things like this happen.

it shocks me when im in the library and see umpteen amounts of students leave for hours on end and just leave their laptops their  i remember seeing on billboards all over college a few months ago a warning about a student who had their laptop stolen in the library and was warning ppl not to leave them unattended.

i was there but didn't have a clue what was going on. i think most people had headphones or ear plugs in so didn't see what it was all about. i only found out what the commotion was when you posted it here

4 people around me in the library have been gone since i came to the library about an hour and a half ago...laptops left, two of them haven't even locked their computer. and while it's not too busy today, it just sickens me that there's people going around looking for a socket to plug their laptop in

Well done on your actions, I wouldnt have noticed any mishaps myself, But I rarely use the libary/reading rooms.

If it was me though, I would'nt of bat and eyelid if someone came in and took someone elses laptop, in all fairness its hte persons fault for leaving their valubale in the middle of a desk and not paying attention to them. Would of given him a lesson!

I saw the lads wandering around and looking shifty but the incident happened just after I'd left.
Well done OP, great for you to do something about it.

    Bystander effect.

Basically, you were doing it wrong. Pick one person out, point at them, tell them to do it, far more likely to get it done.

Sure, it's best not to leave things unattended, but it's not as if that gives license to someone else to take something that isn't theirs.

And yeah, it's always disheartening to see the bystander effect in action.

Theres a diffrence then leaving your items there and going to the toilet then leaving them there and ****ing off for 1+ hours. if your not there for an extended amount of time you should take your items with you.

Don't ask me. If I'm ever in the library it's because I'm rushing to meet a deadline. I fight crime on weekends and even then, only at night time. Leave me alone when I'm in the library.

People should stop leaving stuff around the reading room to reserve their place.

Sometimes when I go in there the place is nearly empty, but I still can't get a seat because a hundred or so people left their laptops there for the day.

Seems your warnings have gone unnoticed the person behind me has left their keys and wallet unattended and has been gone for the last half hour.

edit: he's still gone and noticed he's also left an iPod

Teach them a lesson and steal everything.

Teach them a lesson and steal everything.

Sometimes I feel like doing that to people's bikes and showing them how inadequate their lock 'system' really is.

My father used to give my mother the odd slap or quick jab to teach her self-defence and to improve her reactions. Same principle really.
