Accounting information needed for a new business and a good accountant

    Hi all,

    I have a few questions:
My boyfriend used to be self-employed working as a contractor abroad, then there was no work and he deregistered and was a PAYE employee in Ireland for awhile.

Now he has started back working, as a contractor (providing services). His work would be all over Europe and for different periods with different companies. He wants to register with revenue, but he has no idea what he has to do.

He is working on his own and he thinks it would be best to set up as a sole trader. Also he thinks he has to register his company name.

Another issue is that he has been asked to invoice the company he is working for at the moment, however on the invoice he is requested to provide his VAT and company number. As far as we know if he earns under 37 500 Euro per year he does not have to register for VAT. So what should he put on the place of VAT and what is his company number?

Also he wants to find a good accountant to give him advice in relation to the accounts and to do his books and tax returns each year. However, the last time he got a once of accountant, the accountant charged him a lot of money and did not have the returns done on time.

So to recap the questions are:
    1. Should he set up as a sole trader?
    2. How can he set up as a sole trader?
    3. Should he register his business name?
    4. Should he register for VAT?
    5. What is considered a company number for an invoice?
    6. He needs a good accountant to do the books and returns, therefore if anyone is willing could they PM me and give me quote for the work?

At the moment we are based in Limerick, but we move a lot so, post and email work too.

    Hopefully someone can help.
    Thank you.
