    Hi to all,

not sure if this is the correct thread. i am just curious as to yer thoughts on Cat 5 or Cat 6 cabling in a new build. im just about to start the first fix on the low voltage and wondering what to install. i know Cat 6 is more expensive and faster but is it worth the money to future proof a house if there was enough of it pulled in.

interested in your thoughts and advice

    many thanks

GigE, which can be provided by cat5e, offers more speed than the actual write speed of the majority of current hard drives on the market! I can't see any plausible function for 10GigE within the next few years. I'd only run cat 6 if I was running a cable between two heavily-used gigabit switches or something like that.

    Cat5e is fine.
Cat6 was for an older now obsolete 1Gbps Ethernet. Current versions are fine on Cat5e.

Don't use Cat5. But most "Cat5" sold is actually Cat5e!

many thanks for the replies. i am pulling in a load of cat 5e cabling, so that should cover me. i heard thou that there is a tv coming out in the future that will be run totally on cat 6 cable. dont know how true it is but i may pull in a box or 2 to be on the safe side. better to have it than not have it..................

Would folks not go for CAT6 to 'future proof' ?

OR is MM fiber the the future ;) <- kinda a joke, but interested to know opinions

Cat 6 a bit dearer but future proof less drop in freq ,much higher quality.
Cat 6 all the way the equivalent too a 2000 ford focus and a 2011 ford focus st

    Trust me I'm a ninja

When I looked before (about 2 years ago), there was a big difference in price between Cat5e and Cat6 but I may have been looking at the wrong suppliers. If there's less than a 20% difference in price then I'd probably get the Cat 6 to put the issue beyond any doubt. But I figure proper installation is more important to final speeds and reliability than Cat5e vs Cat6.
