Out of date NCT

Thought I'd throw this query to the experts here rather than listen to tiddle taddle elsewhere.

I have a car for sale and the NCT expired in May 09 (its been off the road since that time). If I put it through the test now I know they will only give a cert until May 2011 but what happens if I leave it until June? Will they pass it for 2 years ahead or just back date it?

You'll get a cert until May '13.

Once the car is not 10 years old you will get the NCT until May 2013. If it's 10 years old you will get one until May 2012.

Even if you NCT'd it today, you'd get cert until May 2013.

If he'll NCT it before end of May, he will get a cert until May 2013, no matter how old the car is.

Im just wondering about this. Any idea what the criteria is to have it NCT'd to May 13?

Its just that I put my car (the one I use every day) through the NCT back about 4 months ago and they only give me 18 months on it as it was 6 months out of date.

Registered in May 09, 07, 05, 03 etc

Sorry lads, I read the replies in a hurry.

I will get to May 13 if I leave it till after May this year - that would be the answer I suppose and if I do it before that I will only get till May11

As far as I know not if it's done before it's registration date in May, eg if the date it's first registered is the 25th May and he brings it in on the 23rd May his NCT will last for 2 days, he will then need a fresh one.

Why do you assume that?
You can do NCT up to 90 days before due date.
So if car was registered on 25th May, he could already do NCT from about 25th Feb this year, and still get it until May 2013.

Dont forget the NCT is almost 2 years out of date so there would be no point in me going in early

There is a big point for you to go early, because as said already if the car is over 10 years old, and you will wait with NCT until June, you will get it only until May 2012.
If you do it anytime between now and end of May you will get it until May 2013.
I'm 100% sure about it.

Yes that's all ok where there's a valid NCT on it but there's none at the moment for period up to 25th May, not sure if they will allow you to completely skip one.

Just for clarity the car was first registered on 1/06/2001 and the last NCT cert expired on 31/05/2009

To be honest it's non of their business if you have valid NCT or not.

Rules are clear:

(2) A test certificate which is issued—

(a) not more than 180 days before the first test due date, or

(b) not more than 90 days before a test due date other than the first test due date,

continues in force until the subsequent test due date.

His neares test due date is May 2011. If he test the car now (within 90 days before test due date) he will get the certificate valid until subsequent test due date which is May 2013.

This is my understanding too - the test can be done up to 180 days early for a first NCT or 90 days early for subsequent tests.

Yes, it is.

The test due dates for a vehicle mentioned in paragraph (1) are:

(a) from the commencement of these Regulations until 31 May 2011, the anniversary dates mentioned in paragraph (1) and each subsequent biennial of those dates,

Your vehicle test due date is every two years. The nearest one is in May 2011. Fact when vehicle was tested last time, doesn't change a single thing here.
If you still can't believe it, just read the whole ACT to which I gave you like before.

I highlighted the problem area here. The test date was DUE 09. If he brought it in today, or indeed any day BEFORE 21st May, he would ONLY get it to May 11. He's not bringing it in 90 days early, he's bringing it in 670 days late.
