Firefox 4 in Maverick

Has anyone got a fooproof way of installing Firefox 4 in Maverick so that it actually identifies itself and firefox and replaces the existing intalled version?

1. Firefox Stable PPA provides the latest Firefox stable builds for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

This is a Firefox stable PPA repository that will provide the latest Firefox 4.0 stable. For now the PPA doesn't have any Firefox 4 builds but will get them once Firefox 4 is out. If you add it right now, you'll get a 404 error in Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.

Add the PPA using the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update


Then if you have Firefox installed, you should get an update for the latest Firefox 4 when it will be released (the package name shouldn't be named "firefox-4.0" like it is now in the Mozilla Daily PPA but simply "firefox").

If you don't want to wait until Firefox 4 will be officially released and uploaded to this PPA, you can install Firefox 4 RC already using another PPA - see below.

That sounds like just the ticket. I thought FF4 was out today for some reason.

There even was today.

I'm using the RC on Windows (in work) right now, posting through it.
Its an improvement.

I tried to find it on Lucid this morning but just kinda got bored and wandered off....

So FF4 is apparently ou, I ran the commands in Galen's post and have now a /usr/lib/firefox-4.0 directory, but whether I run firefox or /usr/lib/firefox-4.0/firefox-bin or /usr/lib/firefox-4.0/firefox.sh it's still version 3.6.15 that starts up.

Just download the bundled version from the firefox website and throw a custom launcher on yer gnome panel to point to the dynamic ELF bin. Not everything(espeically beta software) needs to go through the package database:P

I know, it's just baffling how complicated Canonical make something as simple as updating a browser!

Well, after a reboot, there it was...

Bit odd having no status bar at the bottom, not sure if that's a bug or a feature.

yeah... not sur eif it's my theme or if it'z just ugly and barely readible by default though.
Also, I had a hell of a time customising my toolbar in linux and windows - moving one element made the whole thing disappear several times.

Having awful trouble getting FF4 to work in Lucid.

Just won't start.

Annoying me, cos it works on my XP work pc perfectly....

It wouldn't start for me when I upgraded. It just hung with no errors or anything. The solution was deleting the cookies file
~/.mozilla/firefox/profile/cookies.sqlite

It's working fine for me in Kubuntu maverick.

Strange.

I finally got it working.
I had to run it from terminal with sudo.....

Spoke too soon, some mentalism with places.sqlite is causing me to loose use of my forward and backward function.

Chromium is acting up now too.
Thats 2 weekends in a row I have had pitched battles with Ubuntu in some form.

Not quite sure if this is what you mean, but if you're saying that your FF4 setup looks really ugly, it might be because it's using your old (FF3) profile. I've heard of that happening to a few people, basically old configs and themes being handled differently in FF4 or something. The common advice seems to be to wipe your old FF config stuff when you switch to FF4, it that is feasible for you.
