Shimano 12-27 wanted

I'm struggling a bit on the hillier stuff and am considering replacing my 12-25 cassette set-up with a 12-27.

Can I get single sprockets or do I need to replace/swap the entire cassette? I cannot locate individual sprockets in a (admittedly fairly quick) search online. I'm presuming I need also to change the adjacent 23 to a 24 (as well as the 25 to a 27). Currently running a Shimano 105 5700 cassette.

    Ta muchly

The short answer is that you need to replace the whole thing as a unit.

The longer answer is that you can replace individual sprockets, but they are not sold individually by Shimano, so you need to find a retailer that buys the cassettes and splits them up themselves. The ramps will no longer line up so shifting will not be as good. It also won't save you any money. It is primarily done by bike tourists who want a custom cassette that isn't sold as a unit.

For a cassette that IS available stock it doesn't make a lot of sense; I would just buy a new 12-27.

I needed a new cassette in early January (I had a 12-23, totally unsuitable for me), I rang the BikeHub in Howth, explained what I needed (Shimano Ultegra 12-27), the guy said they'd have it in the following day.

I dropped in the next day with the existing cassette (still attached to the wheel). The guys there changed it on the spot & I was out the door in minutes.

    Couldn't have asked for more!

I wanted to hold on to my 28t low sprocket but found the 11-28t MTB cassette too gappy. So I bought a 13-25t and replaced the 23 and 25t on the new with my old 24 and 28t. You have to drive out the retaining pins from the cassette to split it. I wouldn't advise re-fitting the pins though as they could (in theory) drift out into the spokes...
