I have always lived in Ireland all of my life... I left school in 92 and since 1995 I have been self employed with up to 25 people working for me at a time.
I have run painting businesses and I also had a few shops, but now it seems it has become so difficult to get a new business together that will earn a crust today, that I am considering going abroad to find work....
I am married with 2 kids and a lovely wife who I have never been away from before. I know I can turn my hand to virtually anything, and I would be prepared to do so-called 'high risk' work or contract work abroad if the money was there!
Has anybody got any tips or suggestions that might help.... ie, where to go, what to work at, who to approach, what the money is like, etc, etc. I know there must be many in the same boat, but your help is much appreciated, John.

Painting is related to construction. Construction is nearly dead and will be for some time. Painting does not have the legal protection of such trades as Gas or Electricity so that anyone can do it, thus depressing pay rates. Jobs are scarce as most unemployed males are doing up their own houses if they need doing up rather than pay someone to do it.

I'd say your options are limited to some place like Canada, NZ or Australia but know nothing about the visa requirements to get there. Europe might be a possibility but language would be a difficulty there.

It would all depend on the mobility of your wife and children, are they in school or at an awkward stage in life.

London, with the upcoming Olympics may be a possibility.

Would Holland be out of the question OP? Close to home for relocation, their level of English is excellent & communication shouldn't be a problem, no need for visa's, etc

Here's a recruitment agency below that you might find useful:

    http://www.undutchables.nl/

Or like doolox suggested London, try their job websites, e.g
    http://www.jobsite.co.uk/

You should also create an account & use LinkedIn.com & try build up a network with potential employers

Great suggestions from both of you, thanks a million!
My family are quite young, 8 and 4.. and I am stuck with a mortgage here too, so I would be keen to get contract work if possible. I am looking at these options and I actually have a linkedin account which has been more of a 'resume' than a proper active account. I will be using that account more now.... I will also try those recruitment agencies and others for leads too!
    Thanks to both of you....;)
