Surely they could have foreseen a 'large' number of people trying to register for hell of the west.

It's not as if the numbers were like those trying to get take that tickets.

What a joke. The race has now disappeared from the site & I couldn't enter earlier. Presume that's because the spaces are gone GRRR. As the OP stated, there can't have been tens of thousands all logging on at the same time. Really bugs me when things aren't done right - I presume they have professionals employed to run TI (as opposed to volunteers, in which case it's still annoying but more understandable)?

The online entry system for Kilkee had technical difficulties this morning and it is now shut down. If you were not one of the people who registered this morning - the online entry system will reopen on Thursday morning at 9am. Apologies to everyone for this inconvenience, Race Director

Looks like the spaces are still there - it crashed fairly early in the sign up process. Its not hard to forsee this happening, unless you are prepared to spend the cash and get the server capacity every time a popular race comes on board it will crash.

Runireland have the same problem every year with the Galway 5k series it crashes every time, I was trying to get in over on holidays but when you are data roaming and shelling big bucks out for it you can only spend so much time waiting for pages to load so I gave up. I presume we will get the usual excuses about people refreshing the page but when you see Ironman websites able to sell out 2500 entries in the one day it rings hollow for me
