Recently ive been looking at dog food and began to wonder which is the best for a working dog? For sometime i have been using Madra, it has Protein 20% Oil 10% Ash 7.5% Fibre 3.7% in it and the dog is gaining some:rolleyes: weight but not a whole lot. So i was wondering is there anywhere in Kildare, Dublin or close surrounding areas which do good working dog food?

Below is some brands i looked at 15 kg bags

    Red Mills €18.95

    Champion €15.95

    Madra 2 x 15kg €25

Hill's Science Plan €46-€65:eek: seriously and from what i see only 12kg bags

Pedigree Complete €33.90- i was told not to use this brand because theres way to many chemicals in it, anyone use it?

    Eukanuba Dog Food €57.90

    Royal Canin Medium Adult €58.90

What sort of protein, carbs, oil etc etc do you look for?

Hey I'v been using Cara dog nuts and found them excellent. Its a bloke from Dunboyne in Meath that makes them but they are available from lots of places. In case ur looking the guy who distributes/owns them, his name is Sean his office number 01-8255541. I found them great with my 2 Irish R&W setters. Cheep aka around €16 per bag but, very good I found with my working dogs as have mates in the gun club. With dog feed its a try and see, what the dog likes and trives on is all that matters. Good luck choosing .

I have a Golden Lab and use Blue Grass working dog.
It's a 22% Protien feed and he loves it. There is just a nice amount of flesh on him.
I am actually selling it down here and it is going very well.
At €12 for 15kg it's great value. Alot of local gun clubs are using it and have yet to have a complaint. I don't know who would stock it in Meath/Dublin but try some of the Farmer CoOp's?

Dogs like probably every other animal on the planet prefer and need a varied diet.

Dogs need and eat meat not corn and barley.

I use Brilly's Choice, €14 a bag. Friend of mine who breeds dogs buys it by the pallet. lots of oil in it so dogs have a nice shiny coat !! Feed them loads of venison offcuts and meat from local hunt kennels to top it up !!

I use "Real Nature" dog food. Seriously pricey (€70 / 15KG), but you have to feed so little of it in comparison to other brands because it has such good ingredients. It's cold-pressed and looks like beef nuts for cattle. Zooplus sell it.

I brought the pup in for booster shot. The vet gave me a free sample bag of the hills science plan & of course she loved went in to buy a bag at the weekend €16.95 for 3kg. I bought a bag. But it's the last one I will be buying.

mince, tripe, lambs liver, lamb and beef hearts, chicken, sardines the odd time and a few shin bones during the week I also add a few eggs to keep her coat shiney. Its easy for me to get the meat from work like but can be hard to get meat cheap otherwise

I throw in a tin of tuna, the dog likes it too:)

Fish is good food for dogs and especially oily fish like salmon, tuna, mackeral and sardines but if giving tins which i imagine you do, you have to watch the salt content as some tins can have a bit too much salt in them.

Dogs love thick bones to knaw on as it cleans their teeth but watch thin bones like ribs as they can break and get stuck in them.

My lads had duck legs and rice(same as meself) tonight +Madra for the retriever and Bakers puppy for the Vizsla.
Last night they had steak and kidney pie +nuts.
To be honest I was using the more expensive stuff ( Burns or Bakers complete) and they weren't all that keen on it.
They much prefer the Madra and a mixture of kithcen scraps/raw meat/cooked liver/chicken and a tin of good dog food maybe once a fortnight.Just keep it varied.
