    Hi all,

I've decided to go back to college to do a higher diploma in mathematical science, and I'm looking at doing it in either Maynooth or UCD.

Has anyone done the H.Dip in Maths science in either of these colleges?Does anyone know what the differences between the courses are?
What sort of career options does it provide?I don't really want to get in to the economics/finsnce side of things and would probably be more interested in research type stuff or maybe even teaching down the line.

I've looked at the modules and there are some differences, but I'm not sure if they're just named differently, or if the content is completely different. For example there is mathematical biology (which sounds pretty interesting) in UCD but not in Maynooth

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks

    Hi.

I'm doing this course in Maynooth at the moment. It's really enjoyable, and can be very challenging.
It's not at all focussed on finance. Lots of proofs and pretty abstract ideas.
The main areas covered are analysis, groups, rings & fieds, topology, and number theory.
You need to be pretty comfortable with basic set theory, linear algebra and calculus.
It would be good preparation for research.
Not sure if it would help you get into teaching, that depends on the content of your degree i think.
They do offer Mathematical Biology here, but it's taken in 3rd year undergraduate.
However, you may be able to take it instead of another module.
I would recommend getting in touch with the postgrad coordinator, he is very hepful, and will answer any questions you have.
You can find his details here: http://www.maths.nuim.ie/pghowtoapply
