Ok guys I have an old Dell Inspiron Laptop that I bought in September 2005 that I just use for internet browsing. I was on the internet today and all of a sudden a purple verical line appeared near the centre of laptop LCD screen. The line is permanent and does not disappear even at startup. I plugged the laptop into my external monitor to see if it was anything to do with the graphics card but this line does not appear on the external monitor, So I reckon its not the graphics card but I am open to correction.

Anyway does anyone know what it could be and would it be expensive to fix? Laptop isnt worth peanuts but its useful to me.

It could be the LCD or it could still be the graphics card. If you can open it up check the connections to make sure they're tight. If it's the graphics card it could be expensive as Dell frequently weld the graphics card onto the motherboard so both would need to be replaced. I doubt it's the LCD and I'd suspect the graphics card. Try reinstalling the device drivers for the card. If that fails Id probably replace the PC as a repair could work out expensive and something else could fail later

If it was a cheap repair, id go ahead with it but anything to do with the graphics card would be expensive to fix and not worth it as the laptop is old.
