Tinkering with the idea of changing my driver...
have been using a ping G10 for about 5 years, although im very happy with it i notice lads with more modern drivers that i used to outdrive by 15-20 yards are now alongside and sometimes passed me...
Dont really like the idea of an adjustable driver...i reckon they would wreck my head chopping and changing!
What do ye recommend, all input welcomed...cost not an issue(as long as the missus doesnt find out;))
    cheers

My buddy has the G10 stiff-flex,I bought the G15 last summer, same shaft.
He reckons they're the same driver-and I agree with him pretty much.

Length wise both the same, two different shapes-G15 falls softer on the ground and doesn't run out as much as the G10.
G15 tends to go astray less too.
I'm a high handicapper,I'd imagine lower handicappers would benefit more than me tbh.

Played on Friday with a friend who was using a new driver he bought a couple of weeks ago "King Cobra" think it was S9.1 and definitely has a stiff shaft.

I was using my titleist 975D driver(about 3-4 years old) and when I was hitting the fairway normally 260-280 yards, he was 20-30 yards past me, on one hole he drove it 345 yards(slightly downwind) and he hits a natural fade...................

I think I myself will need to upgrade as I thought I was above average for an amatuer golfer.

    Thanks bob
im itching to give a drive over to nevada bobs and check a few drivers out,
i know a lad with one of those cobras and he hits it miles aswell, technology has definatley left my old G10 behind......

If your willing to spend then the answer is very simple! Go get fitted! You will be allowed to try several set ups and will find exactly what you need. It will take half an hour and cost no more than 50 euro for the fitting.

I recommend fore golf in Nass. Simply because I used them and found them excellent.

Buying off the shelf is madness in my opinion, if your serious about golf that is!

Thanks noel, agree with you on the fitting, got fitted for my irons a few months ago....dave keating,my local pro does all that,so he'll be visited very soon:)
he specializes in callaway,so maybe the new Razr is an option

In all likelihood that is not down to the G10.............

I don't think this is true to be honest. The manufacturers produce a new diver every year and each time they reckon the new one will hit the ball farther than the old by 8-10 yards. That means that a G15 is hitting it 40-50 yards farther than the G2...........??? Don't think so.
It's possible that you have out grown the shaft and are now using the wrong shaft. I would go down the route of finding a G10 with a different shaft than in yours and give that a go first.

Why? One could argue that getting a €350 driver on the basis of one custom fitting is madness too. That custom fitting will only fit you for the swing you had that day. If you're not swinging your best then you'll get incorrect data.
I think one should only get custom fit iin conjunction with a lesson.

A fitting might result in a cheap driver and a cheap shaft suiting you best. And I don't think your swing should be that inconsistent for a fitting not to work. I mean obviously the length of the club would be hard to get rite but you swing speed, club head speed, angles of attack and swing planes ect should be fairly consistent. If not then they will be at least within a tolerance for them to find a very well suited combination of shaft and club head!

Not sure about this. All depends on how well you're playing. 3 times i've had swing speed measured.
1st time I was playing well at the time and swing speed measured 109mph average.
2nd time I was playing poorly. Swing speed measured 98 mph average
3rd time, playing well I was back up to 109/110 mph

Advice from the pro I get lessons from is to get about 5 custom fitting sessions, in conjunction with lessons. That's how to get a proper analysis.
Unless you're a scratch golfer or close. Then your swing would be consistent enough for one session..........

Had the G10 myself and changed to the I 15 with very same spec and easily getting extra distance.

    162mph....launch angle was very low though,around 9degrees

    162mph....launch angle was very low though,around 9degrees

    162mph is your ball speed.....

Swing speed and balls speed relate to each other, swing speed and balls speed (ball speed and swing speed) have a ratio of 1:1.5, so if your ball speed is 162mph, your swing speed is 108mph or there about.

no,he didnt, he just thought i was teeing the ball too low, spin rates were fine just the launch angle was below what it should be.....
    i hit one with 296 yard carry once i tee'd it up a bit:D
Tee it high and let it fly is the new plan!!

to anybody getting fitted for a driver beware the testers sometimes trick you into thinking you're hitting it further that you actually are by moving the mat slightly closer to the wall, was it trackman you were measured on?

a swing speed of circa 110 won't produce a carry of 296 yards, dream on friend
next time bring you're tape measure,it should be (i think) 8 mts from target

Well he did recommend that i keep my own driver,so he certainly wasnt trying to trick me...."was it a trackman"...i have no idea
as for doubting i can hit a 296 yard carry with a swing speed just below tour average....the testing bay is well elevated,it was slightly down wind and it was about 20 degrees outside....

"dream on friend"....what a silly thing to say
i've just checked out average swing speeds on pga tour.com.....here is a sample of swing speeds on tour.......John Daly-115.9,Geoff Ogilvy-111.9, stricker-109,Furyk-106.9,Zach Johnson-104.9

+1 - I use my old Titleist 983 during the summer months and it's as old as the hills. The 975D preceded that one again - the old Tiger Woods machine.

Nice club all the same, but head size about the size of one of today's 5 woods.

you clearly didn't read my post correctly, i said your swing speed doesn't match your carry, simple
i'll give you a quick stat,Geoff Ogilvy average carry 271.4,longest carry all year,294...............you are good but you don't know what your talking about

don't think chalkie is trying to big himself up here he did say one went 296 but as heavy balls pointed out the figures don't add up:rolleyes:

True. I don't think he's bigging himself up either. He did also say that other factors included an elevated test bay, a downwind and warm air.

So good news then Chalkie. A couple of hundred euro saved. Happy days. Plus you now have the confidence that you have the right driver for you.

Hi guys I checked and it is actually the 975 FE although I bought it in 2006 brand new in pro shop, maybe the pro shop had this one left with a while, well I do seem to hit it well enough but I was thinking of going for a new Driver soon anyway. I think the FE stands for Fade Enhanced but my bad shots are a slice so maybe I need a straight up Driver rather than one that emphasises my slice?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know where in Cork would be the best place to be fitted?

I think you should be getting some lessons on your ocasional slice, its not the clubs fault.

Sorry MaxPower89, I know I am slicing the ball, but I would suggest(please correct me if I am wrong) that my slice is probably emphasised by the club which puts a natutal fade on the club?

I got some lessons last year but I do probably need some again soon.

I'm no expert ssbob, but I’m not sure how much the bias on the clubs actually affects the shot. Maybe for a low handicapper who has a consistant swing and strike. You would still be hitting the occasional slice if you set it up for a draw I would imagine.

It wouldn’t be worth it shelling out for a new driver in an effort to fix the slice.

    Just my 2c of course.

Thanks for that, I think I might go for some lessons so first and then maybe get a fitting done and see if it would make any difference, I am happy enough with my distance when I hit fairways so the driver is probably ok.
