Applying for driving licence - renewing expired provisional

    Hi all,

I'm currently living in Germany but believe getting an Irish driving licence might be easier and cheaper than getting one over here.

I have an expired 2nd provisional licence somewhere at home - so first thing's first I have to renew that. From what I've read, in order to renew it I have to first apply for a driving test, right?

So with all that taken care of, is it still possible for me to continue with the old system - or am I now obliged to complete the 13 mandatory practice hours etc.? My 2nd provisional licence expired between 3 and 4 years ago.

My worry is that because my 2nd prov. has expired, I'll be starting from scratch.

    Thanks,
    David

Not sure if you'd be starting from scratch myself, but if you were to get a first learners permit before the 4th of April (I think) you won't be obliged to do a certain number of hours, so for those of us on several we're OK for now.

For my third permit I applied for the test, sent in the confirmation of test with the usual documentation, and then when I got the licence I cancelled the test - but you'll be on the test rota so you will have to do one in the next number of months.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. Will apply for the test first see and what happens :)

Over here they have a similar system to the incoming one in Ireland. You have to do a certain number of hours driving in various conditions - night driving, autobahn, etc. plus the usual theory. I think it's 12 hours driving minimum, which at 40eur or so per hour clocks up pretty quickly. The bare minimum in instructor's hours and test fees is around 1300eur.
