UPC - Anything new coming up?

    Hi,

There was a time that it seemed that UPC were being active in trying to bridge the gap with Sky. In reasonably short time they introduced HD, Series Link and dual recording. Since then things have hit a shuddering halt. To make it worse they have actually lost some stations. Does any know if they have anything planned in the short to medium term? I believe VOD is due next year which is a long time to wait. Any sign of some more HD channels or new channels of any description?

    Cheers,
    D8

In nothing happens by summer I might ditch the tv service, a customer for 6 years now, bit pissed at the channel line up at the moment. Will keep the BB though.

'Anything new from UPC', another price hike!

    From Wikipedia:
UPC is planning to launch a "video on demand" service for its Irish customers sometime in 2012. Already available on UPC services in the Netherlands, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland and Austria. The video on demand service will allow customers in the Republic of Ireland to watch classic movies and the latest cinematic releases.

Thought I read somewhere that a catchup player like SKYs player is coming also.

A catch up player would be great.
Does anyone think theyll put one of the new channels on 105?

I have the value package and Pick TV works fine, try unplugging the stb and plugging back in to see if it works again, had that problem a while back

    Yes it looks great but..
The UPC box, with elements of the above, will first be introduced by UPC in the Netherlands with the other countries in which Liberty Global owns cable operators to follow from 2012 including Unitymedia in Germany, UPC in Austria and Cablecom in Switzerland.
And obviously, the tiny island Ireland is not on the list

and also if you are on mmds you will get nothing extra cant even get a dvr box not to mind hd, hence why i went to sky

We may be a little later to get it but its on the cards to be used here too. UPC tend to have uniformed networks when it comes to equipment.

that new box does sound ooh. but i presume they will wait till they have more of the country upgraded to their facilities. for instance here i can get digital+, but not hd, phone or internet yet. so i am assuming a fancy box such as that would be a waste of space brick for me before more upc facilities come online in my area. here's hoping they get the broadband down here quicksmart tho

anyone in a rural location will be on mmds for a good while yet unless they are allowed to use mmds for wireless broadband, the infrastructure needs to be upgraded before you will get anything more than what you have

Are you sure of this? I had the DVR on MMDS in South Dublin for the last few years, only got rid of it as they bought out my TV supplier recently and now I have their BB and HD.

O’Neill, who is also the deputy chairman of UPC Ireland, said the device would be available in Ireland during the summer of 2012. The Netherlands and Switzerland have previously been named as the initial markets for Horizon’s deployment during 2011 with Germany (Unitymedia) and Austria to follow

Now I think the first one is a typo because why else would they mention Ireland first?

they either upgraded your system to true cable if you have hd or your on the ex-ntl system as its not on the ex-chorus system thats 100%

They recently bought the cable company in my apartment complex so I could change over to cable, I think it was ex-NTL MMDS I was on as it was coming from the Naul.

Unfortunately the only joke is UPC themselves!

ex-NTL MMDS - Dublin, Waterford, Galway, and Mayo - is based on the DVB-C (Digital Cable) standard, so UPC equipment works fine on it including the DVR.

ex-Chorus MMDS - the rest of the State - is based on the DVB-T (Digital Terrestrial) standard. The DVR doesn't work on this network. AFAIK the equipment used on this network is still the Sagem boxes used by Chorus.

    UPC tweeted yesterday:
"We will be announcing new channels in the near future to add to the current line up."
They'll be filling those ITV slots soon
