    Hi,

Would anyone have any suggestions on where I can get film reels created (advert reels) to show before 35mm movies. The idea would be simply to display either static or animated sponsorship logos in advance of a screening. I would also need a digital copy where the screenings are digital.

    Thanks!

I've been through this process a few years ago when I screened my short film in cinemas by buying screen advertising time - the first time this had been done in Ireland or maybe anywhere.

The process has changed slightly since the introduction of digital projection but not much.

You can get Carlton Screen Advertising to handle the transfer to 35mm film & digital cinema format. Or you can get the transfer done somewhere else and give them the give them a 35mm neg/print and they'll do up the prints they need for exhibition.

I think for most campaigns they'll need a 35mm version for screens without digital projection. I think if you give them a 35mm print they'll make the digital version from that if you don't have digital version. You can give them the ad in a wide range of formats for 35mm or digital projection. But there are some restrictions to do with sound levels and sound format etc...

For 35mm you need to supply sound in at least Dolby SR format. Only place in Ireland I think that can do that is Ardmore Sound. So there is a cost in getting Ardmore to mix and output the audio to the required standard and on the required tape type.

From Carlton Screen's site they mention only needing stereo audio for digital projection so this expense could be saved if screening digitally. Best to check with Carlton.

I got my 35mm transfer from DigiBeta tape done by a company called Molinare in London. They sent the 35mm to Carlton also in UK (with Dolby audio) and they took it from there. For me it was cheaper this way.

Another thing your ad needs to meet certain advertising standards and must be approved by a the Cinema Advertising Association. Basically send them the ad with a form and it takes about two weeks for approval.

Read more on the Carlton site:

And I suggest giving Carlton Screen a call and talking to them about your project. They were very helpful to me.

If you need someone to make your ad / handle the process (and have some sort of a budget) give me a shout.

Hi Jason - much obliged for the response. Very helpful and set me on my way. The CSA web page you linked is solid and I contacted them and as you mentioned they were very helpful.

The idea of ad space to showcase your own material is great!
