Harddrive & Kinect

The harddrive in my xbox is on the fritz, reason I've figure this is because the system won't power on with it plugged in, take it out it's fine, I have a few laptop hard drive around the place that I guess I could format if I could figure out how to. What I want to know is if I'd be better off getting a new xbox package that comes with the larger drive and kinect or buy them separately
