Just watching a show called Wife Swap and their is this family that live on a farm. The youngest son's best friend is a lamb. He has it on a leash and takes it for walks etc.... He said he knows his parents will one day kill it and sell it. I think that is horrific. Why would anyone think it's OK to do that to a child?

The mum and dad are in agreement with each other that that is what will happen. I suppose there really is someone out there for everyone.

uh-oh We're the Blackberry booooys is on :D

Well the other alternative is to let the child continue having a pet lamb as a best friend.

    Very odd alight.

We used to have pet chickens and I had names for them all.

    We never eat them though.

After awhile Mad and Dad used to just send each one off to live on this special farm in California where each Chicken there could spend the rest of their lives eating golden corn in the sunshine and play with all the other chickens from all over the world.

He's about 7. They live a on a remote farm. It's either the lamb or a tree. I think personally I'd prefer it was the lamb.

At least if it gets hit by a car he can roast it. Mmmm

Ya I seen that one. The American version of wife swap says at the start that some scenes are created for entertainment purposes doesn't it? maybe this was one of them...

Growing up on a farm, that boy will soon find out for himself that the animals there aren't companions but a livelyhood.

Maybe his parents are just honest and upfront and the boy is old enough to understand.

Awwww, your parents are lovely. Do you have any idea how much a plane ticket costs for a chicken - and all the quarantine etc. ;)

I bet that lamb, with all the love and attention given to it, will taste especially delicious.

Well, the new 'mom' just bought the lamb for the kid. The kid is delighted; the dad is pissed off. ha ha.

Wife Swap = not necessarily authentic.

It may be have been dramatised so that cretins feel compelled to watch it.

That reminds me of the film The Yearling. The wee fella had a pet deer who was eating all the parents' crops, he had to shoot it I think in the end. Very sad. The wee lad was doing his nut "I hate ya maw, I hate ya paw...I hope y'all die."

(Op My 10yr old's beside me, he was much amused at your 'blackberry boys' comment:D)

The poor kid - how can the parents scar him like that? He'll be like a lamb to the slaughter.

No clue, but we just wanted to be nice to them as they started to get older.

They were great pets and so the money didn't matter to my folks I guess.

We sent some rabbits too and that was when I found out that one day I will join them at the farm - can't wait.

When I was 10 / 12 or so we had an orphaned lamb. So I took care of it as a pet.

When my dad asked me if I wanted to keep it or sell it I asked him how much I would get in each scenario. He said approx IR£40 straight away if we sell it for slaughter or (as it was a female) possibly IR£40 a year beginning in 1 / 2 years down the line if we keep it and sell its lambs.

Needless to say the free time I had not having to look after the lamb helped me enjoy my new football and jersey immensely.

The smugness of people when it comes to animals always amazes me.

I think the parents are being pretty ****ty. If it was a dog they would have no problem in letting the kid take care of it. You should never teach a child to be arrogant with an animals life. We protect all children regardless of their intelligence and appearance.

But there appears to be something in us that makes think irrationally when choosing those who we deem worthy enough to live by our side. The Nazis selected the prettiest Jewish girls to keep alive and discarded the old and ugly. Much like we select the most aesthetically pleasing animals as a substitute for human love and discard millions who do not look something as souless as 'cute'.

I thought it was really mean to be honest, one lamb not being sent to the slaughterhouse was not going to break the bank.

The kid was delighted the new mom bought it for him. They asked him what the best part about wife swap was and he said 'she let me keep Lambert'. Nice :)

I pick whatever animal I can easily kill with a hammer to keep beside me. If one is going to turn on me I want to be capable of defending myself.

I had a lamb as a child, I also had two calves.

Not only was I completely aware they were going for slaughter, I actually ate one of the calves, the other I profited from.

My friend had a pig, he was called sausages, guess why?

    Mmm... sausages...

OK, so it didn't bother you, but it upset this child, which is the point I was making.

Lambert? That poor lamb is going to be picked on by all the other lambs, and then he'll become a black sheep. He'd be better off being eaten than being called lambert

Why did you leave that ranch?
Doctor, we don't have any more time for any of this now.
But we don't reckon time the same way, do we?
    - This is all the time you'll ever have. - Later. Listen to me. We've only got five...
    No. I will listen now.
After your father's murder, you were orphaned.
You went to live with cousins on a sheep and horse ranch in Montana.
    And?
And one morning I just ran away.
Not "just", Clarice. What set you off?
    - You started at what time? - Early. Still dark.
Then something woke you, didn't it? Was it a dream? What was it?
    I heard a strange noise.
    What was it?
    It was screaming.
Some kind of screaming. Like a child's voice.
    What did you do?
    I went downstairs.
    Outside.
I crept up into the barn.
I was so scared to look inside, but I had to.
What did you see, Clarice? What did you see?
    Lambs.
    They were screaming.

My cousins used to have a Lamb named Bobby, he'd play football and all....Seriously, he would fetch the ball, control it on the ground with it's nose/snout and bring it back to ya!

The bloody dog used to just run after the ball, give it a sniff an wander off, useless!

Well if he does become a vet he will see & experience worse things than a pet lamb going to slaughter.

I don't see what the problem is really. He knew from the start that the lamb will be killed for food. If he wants a pet then get him a dog or something.

Yeah, exactly. The kid is picking the lamb, and people find it understandable because of how it looks. What about all the sheep from the farm?

I don't think it is that easy to say to a kid - 'don't get attached'. it just happens. They had loads of lambs, letting him have a pet one would not have been that big a deal, imo.

He spent all day with it. I just thought the parents could have let him have it, that's all :)
