    Hi all,

Looking at used cars - private sellers, I have a provisional licence & am a named driver.
What if i wanted to take a car for a test drive, what are the insurance implications? would you think it a big issue to take it for a quick drive if it was your car?

    Thanks

You'd be driving without insurance, get pulled by a Garda or have a tip and you're in a whole world of sh1t. Probably off the road for a year and endorsed license. Driving without insurance is in fairness treated with the severity is deserves by the Irish legal system.

I wouldn't let you drive my car if you aren't insured.

I agree with all that totally, but if Iam to buy a used car from a private seller I cant really test drive it then?

Unless you fancy driving without insurance. Just get someone with a full licence to come with you and get them to drive it.

That would be the best thing to do alright, Iam not one for breaking the law or getting myself into a world of ****! so is a fully insured person, as in fully insured on their own car able to transfer it to another for that test drive

I would say if the truth be known its a well broken rule though. Most people wouldnt give a damm and chance. Fairplay to OP for checking first.

The vast majority of people buying 2nd hand cars would have their own policy with driving other cars extension these days :)

Not every policy offers that though plus the OP is a named driver.

Don't lie to the seller about your insurance status. You may or may not feel it's ok to take a chance, but it's not fair to take a chance with someone else's property unless they're ok with it too.

I was responding to the OP saying there are lots of folk in his position, I don't think there is :)

    Guys,

    Thanks for the replys,
I've been a named driver for a fair few years now, hope to have my full licence soon. So my problem is I've seen a few good bargains out there and would like to pick one up, but I dont have my own car or policy.

Aye, I was a named driver on my fathers car when I was buying my car last year. I rang the insurance company when I went to view the car, told them the usual details, made sure they knew I was the named driver and asked could I be covered for a hour. (Also told them I planned on taking out a policy on the car if I bought it... which was a lie) They transferred the policy over for the hour... (I think they transferred the full policy though, so that would have been the dads policy transferred over with me as the named driver... so make sure noones driving your car during)

I had no problem with them at all, so you may be able to sort out cover for yourself.

I sold a car to a young fella without insurance, his brother was covered so he took the test drive. but i felt bad as they young fella loved the car, so i took him to a back road/lane/dead end and let him drive for a few minutes, he maybe got up to 20mph once:D but it kept him happy and got the car sold.

The Irish System is totally Ridiculous .. You should be able to insure the car, not the person.

Iam not even a young fella, Iam 30 but i've just never owned a car never needed to or wanted to until now. I can get someone to test drive it for me, but what if i buy it and then dont like the feel of the car, suppose its a chance I'll just have to take, unless the seller does someting like yourself senna.

Maybe a daft question, but why not put the cash to passing your test first?

You dont really have too many reference points, so i doubt you wont like the feel of it. My first car was a piece of poo, but i loved it, if i had it now i probably couldn't live with it.
Dont worry about feel, you can sit in the drivers seat and as long as you fit in (:D) it'll be grand. Just make sure who ever your taking knows something about cars.

If the car is no longer insured by the owner
Can I drive it under my existing fully comp insurance or would I have to notify my insurance co

The system in Ireland is designed for the benefit of the insurance companies and their shareholders.

The sensible option is to pay a fee to insure the car and then anyone with a valid licence can drive it.

That would depend entirely on the terms of your insurance policy, read it or contact your insurer (not broker) for clarification.

Ive never heard insurance mentioned when buying or selling a car. I think its an unwritten Irish thing:eek:

A lot of sellers wouldn't be clued up enough to ask.

    Totally.
    Germany:
Me: "Hey, can I take your car for half an hour?"
Friend, while flinging keys at me: "Sure, just bring her back in one piece"
    End of.

    Ireland:
Me: "Hey, can I take your car for half an hour?"
Friend: "Oh, I don't know, let me check with the insurance. It's Sunday and they're phone lines are closed, I'll ring them tomorrow"
    The next day.
Me: "So, did you ring the insurance?"
Friend: "Yeah, they said they need your driving licence details, a copy of your passport, birthcert, a declaration of character signed by the pope, the US president and Kim Jong Il"
After obtaining all these things there is of course problems with the fact that I have a "fordeign" driving licence (It's a EUROPEAN licence you fcuking Bozos! It makes no difference and there's even a law to that effect!"), the signature is the wrong pope and that bastard Kim Jong didn't want to sign the fcuking thing.
In the end my friend decided he didn't want me on his insurance and for me to try and get my own insurance.
I drove a company van at the time and didn't have my own car and therefore insurance.
Company insurance covers the vehicle, not me, no help there.
Walked into a broker and asked to purchase insurance for my friends car for a week, after having to explain it 35 times because they didn't get it, I was laughed out of the office.
In the end I had to RENT A FCUKING CAR even though my friend was out of the country while I needed it and it was layed up.
    AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Stupid fcuking oirish insurance companies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for insuring anything that is different to a 1.4 Corolla or Focus, The Lord Have Fcuking Mercy!
