    hi all!!
i was on this thread not so long ago having bought my new (new to me lol) 02 mondeo and wondering about if i would have clutch problems.
not long after that i had my son lose my keys and had to get replacement cut.
now i have to go and get a whole new clutch fitted cos it's just after burning out :( (i know, if i didnt have bad luck i'd have no luck)

    anyway what im wondering is:
i got the job priced by two different mechanics.
one wanted 1200, the other lad wanted 700.
the cheaper fella has sourced a new (hydraulic i think he said) clutch for 450, some special oil for it for 50, and the labour for 200.
does this seem about right for the clutch?? can a clutch be bought cheaper anywhere?? im not complaining about 200 for labour, i hear its an awful dirty job so 200 sounds cheap.
    (i don't want a secondhand one btw)
    any advice appreciated, thanks :)

Is it a petrol or diesel Mondeo?

That Mondeo is a pig of a job on the clutch. As said above is it a Petrol or Diesel?

    its a petrol 1.8
he's happy to do it for 200 but i'm wondering where to source cheap clutches, can they be got cheaper than 450??

In the old pre01 mondeos they were a pig of a job as the subframe had to be dropped first.
If the clutch set-up is the same as the focus, you will need a new clutch slave cylinder as well as the clutch plates.
You could take a chance on fitting just the clutch plates, but you run a high risk of the slave cylinder failing in the near future which would mean that the job of removing the gearbox would have to be repeated.
All-in, for clutch and slave cylinder you would be talking around 220, plus labour of course.

great thanks for that! i'm going to try find out exactly what parts i need and then try source it cheaper on the net rather than paying 450.
450 seems an awful lot to pay for a clutch but i could be wrong cos i havent the first clue about cars! the mechanic says that subframe has to be dropped so maybe it's the same as the older models

I own the very same Mondeo and my buddy did the clutch for me on his driveway :)
It isn't that bad as it seems:the Mondeo doesn't have a full sized front subframe.

You can get a good quality Sachs clutch kit and hydraulic slave cylinder in any decent motor factor. In most places you can get a trade discount (or have your mechanic buy it for you).I've bought the gearbox oil and two drive shaft seals off Ford (I recommend to get new drive shaft seals as well, they cost only a few Euros)

I had a 04 mondeo 2.0 petrol and was quoted 700 for the clutch, however i called desmond ford in derry who offered abut 480 i think.

    Brave man:D

Your wrong about the subframe, it is a full sized thing. A big square one!
In fairness its actually handy enough job but time consuming because of the subframe. Also your spot on for buying them seals, nice and handy to do when its on the ground.

I know it is a big square yoke, but it is kinda open in the middle:no braces, mounts in the middle (as far as I remember)etc.Makes access a lot easier :)
Although most cars are fitted with a frame like that nowadays.
I think my buddy had to drop only one side of it,not too sure...
